He was born and raised in Nurnburg, Germany. At 17, he came to the United States and worked as a baker for Klein’s Mayflower Pastry Shop. Over his lifetime, he worked for Grand Union, Wakefern Foods, Shop Rite, and Inserra. Most recently, he was the supervisor for the bakery department of 22 Shop Rite stores in northern New Jersey. He is survived by his wife Ann Marie (Rizzo) Marschall, his children Ronald Marschall of Andover, Gary Marschall of Wayne, and Lisa Spero of Wolcott, Connecticut, and nine grandchildren. Salvatore M. “Sam” Riela of Avon, Connecticut, formerly of Upper Saddle River, died Aug. 5. He started his own company, Riela Realty Co., in 1976 where he specialized in the leasing and development of commercial and industrial properties. He had been a member of the Upper Saddle River Zoning Board. He is survived by his wife Susan, his children Gina and Rene, Joseph, Jennifer and Bill, James and Carrie, nine grandchildren, and his siblings Caroline Nestola, Ann DeMico, Frances Mannarino, Vivian Cento, Betty Casano, Beatrice Laudati, Rose Vissichio, and Gloria Dattoma. Schelling of Allendale, formerly of Tenafly, died Aug. 3. He was a U.S. veteran of WWII. He graduated from RCA engineering school. He was a member of Archer United Methodist Church in Allendale, and a member of the Knickerbocker Country Club in Tenafly for 20 years. He was the head of the CBS TV Lighting Department in New York City, and was at CBS for 40 years. He was a member of Local 1 International Alliance Theatrical Stage Employees for 63 years. A pioneer in the design of the television lighting industry, he was responsible for the lighting for political conventions, beauty pageants, sporting events, soap operas, and many other events. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Schelling Cellary of Allendale, two grandchildren, and his sister Lucy Schelling Averill of Atlanta, Georgia. Obituaries Leo Adler of Sun City, Arizona, formerly of Waldwick and Suffern, New York, died Aug. 6. He was 90. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of WWII. He attended John Marshall College and City College of New York. Along with his sister Ruth Adler, he owned and operated Adler’s Department Store in Waldwick, which their father had founded in 1927 as Adler’s Dry Goods Store. In Suffern, he was a member and officer of Congregation Sons of Israel, served as chancellor commander of Knights of Pythias Lodge, and was a member of Jewish War Veterans. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Adler (nee Weiss), his sons Joseph of Gambier, Ohio, and Steven of Prescott, Arizona, and his granddaughter Anna Adler of Brooklyn. Edward Wallace Abrams Jr. of Allendale, formerly of Ramsey, died July 25. He was 90. Arrangements were made by the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey. James M. Daly of Upper Saddle River died Aug. 2. He is survived by his wife Dolores Daly, his children Jim, Mike, and Anne Marie, and four grandchildren. Charlotte Davies, of Florida, formerly of Ridgewood died Aug. 3. She is survived by an extended family. She was predeceased by her husband Douglas. Paul R. Hochuli of Ridgewood died Aug. 4. She was 83. Before retiring in 1984, he had been employed at Seaman’s Bank for Savings in New York City since 1969. Prior to that, he had worked for General Electric and GECC. He was an elder and treasurer for the First Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood. He is survived by his wife Audrey (nee Walker), his children Joan Schuttler of Valley Center, Kansas, Lyn Wolfstirn of Ridgewood, Richard Hochuli of Oakland, six grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. Robert William Koster of Upper Saddle River died June 14. He was 87. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He joined IBM and held various sales and upper management positions, retiring after 37 years. Memorial donations may be made to the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saddle George Marschall Ho-Ho-Kus Jottings Seniors plan events The Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors will host a series of events, beginning with an afternoon of games in August. The group will play bingo or Triva on Tuesday, Aug. 23. On Sept. 21, the seniors will visit Adam Todd’s Restaurant in Andover where they will see “The Legend of Lanza.” Carol Greene, president of the Friends of the Hermitage, will present “Franklin Turnpike: 300 Years of Local and Through Traffic” on Sept. 27. Greene will draw from her award-winning book “The Ramapough Cronicles: A 300 Year History of Mahwah and its Surrounds.” On Oct. 11, Nancy Atkins Peck will present “Carl Kemm Loven: Designer of Dreams.” Loven was a well-known architect who designed homes in Glen Rock, Ridgewood, and Ho-Ho-Kus; local shopping centers; and planned communities such as Sterling Forest. On Oct. 25, the group will take a trip to Villa Roma in Callicoon, New York for Oktoberfest. Meetings of the Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors take place the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in the Hermitage Education Building. Students earn dean’s list honors The following Ho-Ho-Kus students have earned dean’s list recognition at William Paterson University: Maris Ferreira and Justin Lefebvre. In order to qualify for the dean’s list, a student must carry a minimum of 12 credits for the semester and earn a grade point average of 3.45 or better. August meeting schedule consolidated The Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Council has cancelled its regularly scheduled work session for August. The council will only meet on Aug. 23. Sessions are held at borough hall, 333 Warren Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus, and begin at 8 p.m. Scout painting house numbers on curbs Ryan De Marco of Boy Scout Troop 54 in Ho-Ho-Kus has planned his Eagle Scout service project for this summer. He will be painting house numbers on the curbs in front of borough homes in order to make the homes easier to locate, particularly in an emergency situation. Scouts working toward the rank of Eagle are required to plan and execute a project that benefits the community.
