Scout seeks books for Camp YDP Girl Scout Christina Julian of Upper Saddle River is seeking donations of books and educational materials to benefit Camp YDP in Paterson. This effort is Julian’s Gold Award Project. Camp YDP (Youth Development Program) offers Paterson children who are ages three through 12 a place where they may play and study throughout the school year and during the summer. The program is in need of supplies to assist tutors who are helping the children read. Julian is collecting new or slightly used books including informational books -- the type that could assist children with school reports since many do not have computers; picture books; chapter books; and gift cards to Barnes & Noble. Donations may be dropped off by Aug. 18 at 40 Lilline Lane, Upper Saddle River. To arrange for a pickup, call (201) 686-8824. Register for fall tennis clinics Registration is now being accepted for the 2011 fall tennis clinics offered by Upper Saddle River Recreation. The five-week session will be held at the newly renovated Wickersham Tennis Courts, located in front of the Reynolds School. The clinics will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning on Sept. 12. The cost for the session is $90. Registration forms are available at borough hall or online at www.USRtoday.org. Camp YDP (Youth Development Program) offers Paterson children who are ages three through 12 a place where they may play and study throughout the school year and during the summer. The camp is in need of supplies to keep the children active and outside. Kiani is seeking donations of: jump ropes, soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, plastic baseball bats, tennis balls, sidewalk chalk, Frisbees, baseballs and softballs, baseball mitts, hula hoops, sports store gift cards, and first aid supplies. Other sporting equipment would be welcome, but it is important to remember that the children do not have large locations in which to play. Donations may be dropped off at 72 Danebury Downs, Upper Saddle River through Aug. 18. To arrange for a pickup, call (201) 887-7634. Trike-A-Thon (continued from page 8) accepted at the SRVJWC table at Upper Saddle River Day. All proceeds from this event will be donated to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A tradition for more than 25 years, Trike-A-Thon is a fun, week-long curriculum for daycare centers and pre-schools. Children learn riding-toy safety lessons through a series of interactive stories from special characters, Bikewell Bear® and Pedals the Bunny®, while raising money for Saint Jude’s. At the end of the Trike-A-Thon week, children bring their trikes or riding-toys to school and practice the safety lessons they have learned. Saint Jude depends on community-based fundraising programs like Trike-A-Thon to carry out their mission. At Saint Jude, families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance and no child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. The daily operating cost for Saint Jude is $1.5 million, which is primarily covered by public contributions. Dora the Explorer, Nick Jr.’s beloved character, appears in two television spots on Nick Jr. inviting children to participate in the program. A loyal Saint Jude partner since 2007, Nick Jr. has also developed a dedicated web page featuring the Dora spots and additional information about bike safety and Trike-A-Thon. For information on how to register in person for this event call Leslie Lahoud at (201) 953-9399 or visit www. mytrikeathon.org to register online.
