August 10, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 17 Waldwick Watch Author to demonstrate creation of a picture book Children’s author/illustrator Jennifer Merz will present “From Paper Bags to Picture Book,” a special story and craft program for children. The program will be held at the Waldwick Public Library, 19 East Prospect Street, at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 17. Using storyboards, collage materials, and a PowerPoint display, Merz will demonstrate how she writes and illustrates her picture books, starting with treasured memories and brown paper bags. Her final illustrations are beautifully textured, handcrafted collages created in full-color. Participants will make a torn-paper collage during the craft session. Merz is the author of “Playground Day!” and “That Dancin’ Dolly.” A resident of Allendale, she is currently employed as a library assistant at the Waldwick Library. Following her presentation, Merz will be available to sign copies of her books. The program is free, but space is limited and registration is required. Solid waste reminder Waldwick residents may throw away large furniture items, mattresses, wooden/plastic outdoor furniture, and carpets in the regular waste. There is no need to contact the borough clerk first. Corrugated cardboard is not permitted in the waste stream and must be taken to the recycling center at 19 Industrial Way. Films feature fabulous leading ladies Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, precedes each screening. The theme for the month of August is Fabulous Leading Ladies. The schedule of screenings includes: Aug. 11, “The Snake Pit” (1948) starring Olivia de Havilland; Aug. 18, “King Solomon’s Mines” (1950) starring Deborah Kerr; and Aug. 25, “Now Voyager” (1942) starring Bette Davis. For additional information, call (201) 652-5104. Leaders sought for Girl Scout program The Waldwick Girl Scout program is seeking volunteer leaders for new troops that will be forming in the fall. Volunteer leaders are needed for troops for girls who will be entering kindergarten. Help is also needed with established troops for older girls. Registration for new girls will be held in September. ESL Programs take summer break The English as a Second Language programs that meet weekly at the Waldwick Public Library have concluded for the season. Meetings for the ESL Conversation Group will resume Monday, Sept. 12 at 10:15 a.m., and meetings for English Language Learning Activities will resume Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. ESL programs at the library are free and open to adults who want assistance learning and speaking English. Waldwick High classes plan reunion The Fourth Waldwick Multi-Year Reunion will be held on Oct. 1 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Doubletree/Hilton Hotel on Route 17 South in Mahwah. Graduates of the Classes of 1966 through 1976 are invited. Family Days Carnival set The Waldwick Lions Club will host its Annual Family Days Carnival Aug. 8 through 13 in the Forum School parking lot off Wyckoff Avenue from 7 to 11 p.m. The carnival will feature rides, food, and games. Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday are wristband nights; attend- ees may purchase the bands to gain unlimited admission to the rides. There will be a fireworks show on Wednesday and Friday nights, and a cash prize will be given away on Saturday. Borough issues solicitors’ permits The Borough of Waldwick reminds residents that every person who solicits door to door is required to carry a copy of a borough-issued permit.
