Weiss appointed as Crossley resigns from council seat
by Jennifer Crusco In the wake of Ho-Ho-Kus Council President Kevin Crossley’s resignation, the governing body regrouped last week with the appointment of Kimberly Weiss to the vacant seat. The council subsequently named John Mongelli as its new president. Crossley, who resigned effective July 1, has moved to New York, where he is working on a time-intensive project as vice president of AAA New York Insurance Services, Inc., in Garden City. He is past chief operating officer and managing partner of Club Agency Insurance Brokerage LLC, an insurance agency with which he was associated with for 36 years. “I am resigning from my position as councilman of the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus,” Crossley said in his brief letter. “Personal reasons have prompted me to move to Long Island, New York closer to my office.” Crossley said he will miss serving the residents of the town he will always call home. Crossley currently serves on the board of directors of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York, Inc. He is past president of Tri-County Independent Insurance Agents Association of Nassau, Queens, and Kings counties. He has served on the Safeco Insurance Advisory Council and the Nominating Committee for the Board of Directors of AAA New York. He received the Bob Morris Award in 2000 and again in 2010. Tri-County Independent Insurance Agents Association presented Crossley with this award for his commitment, dedication, and value service for the betterment of his fellow agents. Crossley has chaired several fundraisers for the Girls Scouts of Nassau County. He joined the Ho-Ho-Kus Council in 2002 and was elected to his third term in 2010. At this January’s reorganization session, Crossley’s peers on the council named him council president. He had been serving as insurance liaison for the borough, commissioner of the Ho-Ho-Kus Ambulance Corps, and deputy commissioner of the Ho-Ho-Kus Fire Department. He has also served as deputy commissioner of the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department and president of the Ho-Ho-Kus/Saddle River Athletic Association. He recently served on the Solid Waste Contract Committee and worked on the PBA contract negotiations. Mayor Thomas Randall praised Crossley in absentia for the former council member’s many years of service to HoHo-Kus. Mayor Randall outlined the process used in finding a replacement for Crossley, who is a member of the Republican Party. Randall noted that, after the news of Crossley’s resignation, the borough’s Republican County Committee presented the council with the names of three individuals who would be prospective successors to Crossley. The mayor added that the three candidates’ resumes all showed how much these candidates have offered to the borough in the past. When Randall called for a discussion of the candidates, and Councilman Phil Rorty said, “They’re all good.” Councilman Doug Troast then nominated Weiss, who rose from the audience and was sworn in as her husband, Doug Weiss, held the Bible. She was immediately seated. Weiss will serve until the Nov. 8 election, at which time she may seek the voters’ approval to continue in Crossley’s seat. The new councilwoman is a 14-year resident of HoHo-Kus. She has served over six years as a member of the Republican County Committee and has been involved as a board member of both the Youth Activities Council and the Ho-Ho-Kus Contemporary Club. Her community involvement has included service as a Girl Scout leader and membership in the Valley Hospital Auxiliary. Weiss grew up in Stowe, Vermont and earned her bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College. She worked for The Travelers in Hartford, Connecticut as an underwriter and as director of property-casualty sales for Travelers Mortgage Service. She is currently co-owner of a retail yarn
store in Wyckoff. She previously lived in Denver, Colorado and in Seattle, Washington, where she served on a local homeowners’ board. The councilwoman and her husband, who is chairman of the Ho-Ho-Kus Recreation Committee, have two college-age daughters. “I’ve been on the Republican County Committee for a while and I’m really looking forward to serving the town further,” Weiss told Villadom TIMES.
