Vetterlein earns dean’s list honor Allendale resident Nicholas D. Vetterlein has earned dean’s list recognition at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia for the spring 2011 semester. Vetterlein is a sophomore majoring in university studies. To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must achieve a grade point average of at least 3.4. Chamber plans meeting. The Allendale Chamber of Commerce will host a lunch meeting on Aug. 9. The session will be held at noon at the Allendale Bar and Grill at 67 West Allendale Avenue. Service comes to Crestwood Park The Ramsey First Presbyterian Church will hold a joint worship service and Pot Luck Picnic with Allendale’s Highlands Presbyterian Church of Allendale on Sunday, Aug. 14 at Crestwood Lake Park, located on West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. Book drive donations sought The Northern Highlands National Honor Society is collecting gently-used elementary level reading books to be donated to Kipp Star Elementary School in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Kipp Star Elementary is opening its doors to its first class of kindergarteners in August. The school will house students in kindergarten through grade four. Due to insufficient funding, the library has very
few books. Collection boxes are located at 10 Gloria Drive in Allendale; the Ho-Ho-Kus Public Library, 91 Warren Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus; and the Glen Rock Public Library, 315 Rock Road, Glen Rock. This book collection will be ongoing throughout the summer and books will be transported to the school every two weeks. Town-Wide Garage Sale participants sought Borough residents are invited to participate in the Allendale Woman’s Club’s Eighth Annual Town-Wide Garage Sale planned for Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Rain date: Sept. 18). In addition to handling the event’s advertising and obtaining the necessary permits, the club publishes and distributes a map highlighting the addresses of all participating households. Lawn markers are provided to identify all participating homes. To be included in this event, mail a tax deductible donation of $25 before Aug. 15 to: AWC, 668 West Crescent Avenue, Allendale, NJ 07401. After Aug. 15, the donation will be $30. The Allendale Chamber is also collecting gently used shoes for Soles4Souls. The shoes will be delivered to Japan and Haiti. Shoe companies, retailers, individuals, schools, and groups are encouraged to donate. Soles4Soles is a non-profit recognized by the IRS; donors are eligible for tax advantages. Donations may be dropped off at Darla’s Porch at the southern end of the A&P Shopping Center in Allendale or at Terrie O’Connor Realtors. Cub Scout registration under way Registration for Allendale Cub Scouts for 2011-12 has begun. Boys in grades one through five are invited to join. Scout programs foster leadership, confidence, and character as participants embark on a variety of adventures. Local bank supports AFEE The Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence, in an effort to raise money for Hillside and Brookside schools, is asking residents who have accounts with
TD Bank to link new or existing accounts to AFEE through the TD Bank Affinity Program. There is no cost to any member, and all banking information is completely confidential. The organization needs a minimum of 50 households to link their accounts for TD Bank to give AFEE a percentage of average balances across all accounts (e.g., checking, savings, money market, CD, and retirement accounts. As an additional incentive, TD Bank will deposit $25 into newly opened non-interest bearing checking accounts. Bargain books available Bargain books are available at the Allendale Library. Current and topical books, tapes, and videos for adults and children may be purchased at bargain prices in the lobby of the Lee Memorial Library at 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. On display are many children’s books, paperbacks, fiction, non-fiction, and current bestsellers. The sale is ongoing and the shelves are restocked daily. Books are priced from 25 cents to $1. The sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Proceeds from the sale go directly to the library for the purchase of new materials.
