Ho-Ho-Kus April 27, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Three-zone watering plan to be used again this year by Jennifer Crusco Once again, Ho-Ho-Kus residents will be asked to abide by last summer’s three-zone watering schedule. Traditionally, the borough has been divided into two watering areas on an annual basis; however, the additional zone was added during last summer’s extended dry spell to further spread out local water use. Residents of each area will be permitted to use sprinkler systems two days each week. Area 1 is located west of West Saddle River Road and south of Hollywood Avenue. Residents in Area 1 may use sprinklers on Thursday and Sunday. Area 2 is located west of West Saddle River Road and north of Hollywood Avenue. Sprinkler days in this zone will be Wednesday and Saturday. Area 3 includes properties east of West Saddle River Road. Residents in this area may use sprinklers on Tuesday and Friday. No watering is allowed on Monday. Anyone found to be watering on Monday, or on a day not permitted in his or her area, will be subject to a surcharge. With proof of new plantings or sod, the Ho-Ho-Kus Department of Public Works may grant permission for additional watering. Contact the DPW at (201) 445-8161 for permission. At last week’s council work session, the governing body agreed that the three-zone system had worked well last year, and said they wished to use the same program this year. When the three-zone program was instituted last July, Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli explained that, although the municipality was not experiencing a drought, tighter restrictions became necessary in order to avoid New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection fines. Cirulli said the DEP levies substantial fines when municipalities pump more than their average number of gallons per month. Map of the borough’s three watering zones. The borough exceeded its average during June 2010, and officials subsequently imposed the updated outdoor watering restrictions. The three-zone plan remained in effect for the summer, after which time it was reevaluated. Borough officials agreed the plan had been successful.
