Allendale April 27, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Council honors Frazier as ‘hero of hard work’ by John Koster The Allendale Borough Council recently honored Allendale Department of Public Works employee Ray Frazier for 20 years of hard, steady work, and for being the kind of reliable, constructive employee who enabled Mayor Vince Barra to fulfill his pledge of no municipal tax increase for 2011. “I like working for the borough and I’m looking forward to giving you guys another 20 years,” the trim, muscular Frazier told the council. Council members lined up to have their photograph taken with a man who helped them keep the roads clean and open in even the worst winter snowstorms. “Ray used to live in West Milford, but I could give him a call and he would be there at the drop of a hat,” Public Works Director Keith Cauwenberghs said of Frazier. “When a guy is working 30 or 40 hours straight, except for maybe a two-hour nap, you get to see what he’s made of, and Ray is 100 percent.” “Ray is the kind of guy who’s always working,” said Councilwoman Elizabeth White. “He’s always a conscientious and dedicated employee. We’re lucking to have him.” “Your really efficient work is what our department is all about,” Mayor Barra said, shaking hands with Frazier as he handled him a plaque of commendation. Mayor Barra remembered that he once gave a talk for the employees and then asked them if they had any suggestions to increase efficiency and work safety. Barra said that Frazier, who is generally taciturn, spoke for about 20 minutes and offered a number of ideas about improved work safety and a more constructive use of time. “Keith told me afterwards that he hadn’t heard Ray talk that much in the past two years,” Barra said with a smile. The ceremony honoring Frazier came from a recommendation that workers of long service and particular effectiveness be honored by the council on special occasions. In other business, the council noted that the budget, formally introduced on April 14 and slated for its adoption hearing on May 12, came in just where Mayor Barra and Susan LaMonica, the council’s financial expert, said it would: zero increase in local property taxes for the entire $12,257,505 budget. Council members pointed out that the zero tax increase is only for the munici- Mayor Vince Barra and Ray Frazier pal-purpose budget, which does not include any taxes associated with the budgets for the K-8 schools, Northern Highlands Regional High School, or Bergen County.
