Residents may join Graydon Pool The Village of Ridgewood has again invited residents of Ho-Ho-Kus to join Graydon Pool for the 2011 season. The pool, located at Linwood and Maple avenues in Ridgewood, will open June 4 and will remain open through Labor Day, Sept. 5. The facility offers the Water’s Edge Café, a picnic area with grills and tables, and a covered pavilion. Amenities also include a children’s playground, sun shades, water features, Adirondack chairs, basketball courts, volleyball nets, bocce courts, ping pong, and shuffleboard courts. Events feature children’s story time and American Red Cross swim instruction. Note: Swimmers who wish to use the deep water area must pass the Graydon Pool Deep Water Test. The badge office will be open for pre-season sales on May 14 and 21 from 10 to noon, and daily from noon to 7 p.m. after June 4. Memberships for non-Ridgewood residents are $160 for adults and $140 for children ages two through 15. Online membership processing is available at ridgewoodnj.net/community pass. Landscape artist’s exhibit open The Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library at 91 Warren Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus is exhibiting works by landscape artist Jack McKenzie during April. The Paramus resident’s display includes lighthouses, covered bridges, fishing village scenes, and barns. McKenzie began painting in the 1990s, first entering an employee art show while working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For more information about the artist, visit landscapesbyjack.blogspot.com. Seniors hear about Ben Franklin Paramus Catholic High School teacher Jack Sherry will present “Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin” at the April 26 meeting of the Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors. Sherry will be dressed in period costume and will discuss Franklin’s life
as entrepreneur, publisher, scientist, statesman, diplomat, and philosopher. The group meets in the Education Center of the Hermitage, 335 North Franklin Turnpike, Ho-HoKus. The seniors group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Education Center. A beverage and dessert are served at noon; programs begin at 1 p.m. Residents who are at least age 55 are welcome to attend. For trip information, contact Sue at (201) 444-7235. For program information, contact Joan at (201) 444-4896. Auxiliary offers scholarships The Ladies Auxiliary of the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department will offer two $750 scholarships for 2011. One will be awarded to a fire department member or immediate family member, and the second will be presented to a HoHo-Kus resident who wishes to continue his or her education. Applications are available at the Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall, The Ho-Ho-Kus Public School, The Ho-Ho-Kus Public Library, and at Northern Highlands High School. Completed applications may be sent to the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, P.O. Box 637, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423. Applications must be postmarked by May 1. Finalists will be notified by mid-May to arrange an interview. Recipients will be notified by June 15. Garden Club scholarships available Applications for the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club’s annual academic scholarship awards will be accepted until May 15. Applicants must be current residents of Bergen County and enrolled students who are studying or planning to study environmental science or related fields, including horticulture and botany. There is no age limit; returning students are encouraged to apply. Scholarships of up to $1,000 will be awarded. Established in memory of Nina McNamara and Charles Anderson, the scholarship fund is supported by the club’s Annual Plant Sale. This year’s sale will be held on Saturday, May 14.
