The ordinance’s adoption, expected this week, paves the way for the hiring 4-27-11 janine of an architect to do the work and to ultimately go out to bid on the construction. It also appropriates $300,000 for the project, all of it to be paid for with private donations received by the library. In February, the council approved a contribution of $100,000 from the borough’s capital improvement fund, bringing the total to the estimated project cost of $400,000. Borough Administrator Gary Kratz explained that because the library is a municipally-owned building, the borough has to approve the work and actually issue the needed contracts. “All of us feel it’s very important to have the library in our town,” said Councilwoman Anita Bozzo at the ordinance’s introduction. “People think that the internet is an alternative, but it is not,” she said. “It’s a good investment for the future, for our children and residents, similar to the high school track, which lots of people can use and enjoy. People can use the library and enjoy it. It’s a good thing,” said Councilman Tom Giordano. The council this week was expected to hire Environetics Group Architects, PC to work on the project. The Englewood Cliffs firm submitted a proposal not to exceed $39,000 to prepare the specifications for the addition and perform construction inspections. Librarian Patty Boyd attended the meeting to thank the mayor and council for the borough’s contribution and overall support. Of the funds on hand, $90,000 is from revenues from the Library’s U.S. Passport Application Acceptance Program. The Waldwick Chamber of Commerce donated $1,000 from its 2010 5K Run proceeds to the effort last week. Plans call for a “bump-out” along the east side of the building which will double the size of the existing undersized meeting room. The existing meeting space would be converted into a multi-purpose room that would provide storage space for local history materials and would serve as a conference room and an area for quiet study. Planning board approval would be required. The addition would retain the building’s traditional look by maintaining the brownstone façade, and would incorporate 1956-style windows. Due to the bump-out method of construction, there would be no interruptions in the library’s service to the public, the building would not close down, and no off-site storage would be needed. 4 th ANNUAL Presenting Sponsor 5 K RUN AND 1 MILE WALK Proceeds to benefit Kisses 4 Kelly and the community of Waldwick Date: Location: Registration: May 1, 2011 Waldwick High School Track & Field 7:30 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. at the Waldwick High School Track Wyckoff Avenue & Hopper Avenue 5K Race: 9:00 a.m. 1 Mile Fun Walk: 9:30 a.m. 5K certified course and sanctioned by the USATF Random prize drawings to all registered participants YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSPAPER Pre-race pick up bib, shirt & goody bags at Waldwick Ambulance Corps Sat. 4/30 – 4-7 PM B tag Chip Timing Race results will be available on www. The Waldwick Band will conclude its season with a concert on Sunday afternoon, May 1 at The Village School in Waldwick. The 3 p.m. concert will feature saxophonist Lew Archer. Archer, who is the principal saxophonist with the Waldwick Band, has studied with the noted saxophone teacher Paul Cohen and has performed with the Ridgewood Concert Band and the Teaneck Summer Band. The soloist has appeared as a featured player on several earlier occasions with the band, soloing on the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. For this concert, he will perform “The Septienne Solo de Contest,” a solo for baritone saxophone and band by the 19th century French composer Henri Singelee. He will be joined by the Waldwick Band Saxophone Quartet in the performance of Eric Ewazen’s “Rhapsody for Saxophone.” The band will be under the baton of Music Director Edmund A. Moderacki, who will open the concert with its 2010-11 signature piece, Henry Fillmore’s “Americans We.” He will conduct the ensemble in Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide Overture” and Gordon Jacob’s “William Byrd Suite.” Also on the program will be selections from Lionel Bart’s Broadway show “Oliver,” the jazz classic “Birdland,” and Paul Hindemith’s “Symphonic Metamorphosis March.” Other marches by Heed, Weidt, and Latann will complete the concert. The Village School is located at 100 West Prospect Street in Waldwick, close to the Waldwick High School athletic field, and offers a fine auditorium with theater style seating for concert attendees. There is no admission charge for the concert. The Waldwick Band’s summer series will begin on Tuesday evening, July 5 at the Waldwick Circle Amphitheater.
