Dear Readers: Sunday, May 1. Details are available in this newspaper, and on our website: www.waldwickchamber.com. Planning an event of this magnitude takes an incredible amount of time and a team of dedicated individuals. One person who has been instrumental throughout is Race Director Stan “5K Guy” Kowalski. With his expert knowledge of how a race should be run, he has raised the bar for 5Ks in Bergen County. This year, as runners and walkers enter the stadium and make their final strides toward the finish line, they will be greeted by a live band: “Frantic!” This band plays upbeat music and has its own spin on the cover rock they perform. We hope you can experience what we have to offer as a runner, a walker, or as a spectator at our town-wide 5K event. Presenting Sponsor Massage Envy Spa will have a massage tent and special event coupons. Platinum Sponsor The Village Grill is offering a 15 percent discount if you present your race bib with your food bill the

first week in May. In addition, there will be prizes, music by DJ Willie, and a deluxe goodie bag for the first 300 registrants. Another person on our team who keeps us going is Wyckoff Chamber Executive Secretary Kim Post. Without her, we would not have had an increase in new members or renewals. Kim is friendly, organized, and efficient and has been an asset to the Chamber since she joined us two years ago. As more businesses join the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce, our community grows stronger. If commerce is strong and vibrant, the community is strong and vibrant. We have witnessed this firsthand by the members who have joined and those who keep coming back. Most recently, we realized just how strong our business community is when we were informed that the “sunflower” decoration at the clock had to come down. We turned to Home Hardware to see if they would find a home for our decoration on their property. Without hesitation, owner Rick Kadien stepped up and gave the sunflower a new home on his property. Within minutes of our conversation, the sunflower and flower pots were prominently positioned on the corner of Franklin Turnpike
and Wyckoff Avenue. We thank Favourtique owners Bob and Denise Lion, who have assisted us with some of our recent “visuals” you may have noticed. We thank them for the dedication, time, and money it has cost them to give us a little “sunshine” in town after the long winter. We thank Rick from Home Hardware for helping us out and allowing the “sun” to continue to shine and brighten our day. The overall good will shown by members of the Chamber is what keeps us going and growing. It’s a good feeling to know how much the people of this great town appreciate what we’re trying to do. The Chamber is so proud of the business people who are members of our team. In order to thank them, we try to give back to the community in their
name on so many different levels. A list of money donated on behalf of the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce is on our website. In closing, please remember that if you are a new or long-time business in town, but not yet a member, please consider joining. I personally invite you to a complimentary breakfast with us at our next general meeting. We would love to know you and help you share your expertise with the community. I leave you with this quote from Sonia Johnson: “Always remember that one determined person can make a significant difference; however, a small group of determined people can change the course of history.” With much gratitude, Christine Figliuolo, President Waldwick Chamber of Commerce
The Waldwick Police Department will be giving the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. On Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Waldwick Police Department will take part in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Residents are encouraged to safely dispose of unwanted medications by bringing them to the rear of the Waldwick Public Safety Building at 15 East Prospect Street. The service is

free and anonymous; no questions asked. According to a recent DEA press release, this initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high. More Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined, according to the 2009 (continued on page 19)
