Highlands, Allendale board trustees seek endorsements
by John Koster The Allendale K-8 election and the Northern Highlands Board of Education elections will both be uncontested this year. Voters will be asked to cast their ballots on Wednesday, April 27. Voters will decide on the $15,199,223 tax levy associated with the Allendale K-8 district’s 2011-12 budget, and the $19,982,644 tax levy associated with the Northern Highlands Regional High School Board of Education’s 2011-12 budget. Todd Fliegel, an Allendale Planning Board member and a member of the Lee Memorial Library Board, will run unopposed for the seat to be left vacant by K-8 Board Vice

President Patti Malloy-Blomberg, who has opted not to see re-election. Fliegel is a chartered financial analyst who works in New York City. He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Seton Hall University and is the father of twin daughters born last year. He has been an Allendale resident for the past 13 years. Fliegel has sometimes represented the library’s interests before the Allendale Borough Council. He said he hopes to ensure the best possible education for Allendale K-8 students within the constraints of the new two percent cap. Allendale candidates Anne Goddard and Jill Webb, both of whom are newcomers, will seek the two uncontested seats on the Northern Highlands Regional Board of Education. Goddard is active in the Allendale K-8 school music program. Webb has served as the Parent Teacher Organization of the Brookside School. Incumbent Barbara Garand, a former teacher, will run to retain her seat from Upper Saddle River on the Northern Highlands board. She is active in a number of community programs related to youngsters and education in Upper Saddle River.
Recently, 25 eighth graders from Brookside School took part in the annual convocation at Ramapo College. In order to attend the convocation, students wrote essays and were selected to represent their school. The Allendale students met with peers from Ramsey and Upper Saddle River and were divided up into 10 teams. Each team listened to professional speakers and gathered facts that helped each group solve a problem. Teams were also responsible for the design, name, features, prototype, pricing, creating a logo, and marketing and advertising of a product. Teams then made presentations to the other teams and the judges.
