April 20, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 5 Ho-Ho-Kus Voters to decide on budget, board representatives by Jennifer Crusco On Wednesday, April 27, registered voters in the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus will be asked to decide on the $11,432,932 tax levy associated with the board of education’s proposed $12,491,566 operating budget for 2011-12. Voters will also select their representatives to the school board. The tax rate associated with the proposed budget is 1.05 per $100 of assessed valuation. If approved at the polls, the budget would result in a tax increase of $256 for the owner of a home assessed at $751,375, which the board considered the average assessment in Ho-Ho-Kus. Two incumbents and a challenger have filed for the two available three-year seats on board of education. School Board President Ellen Marie Walsh, incumbent trustee John Buffa, and newcomer Amy Langevin are seeking election. Incumbent Mary Ellen Dooley Nye is running unopposed for the one-year unexpired seat on the board. Buffa was appointed to the board in 2009 and was elected in 2010 to complete former board president Peter Terenzio’s unexpired term. Buffa is now running for a full three-year term. The candidate is a 14-year resident of Ho-Ho-Kus, where he lives with his wife Gina, who attended the HoHo-Kus Public School as a child. Their three daughters, Alexa, Taylor, and Blake, all attend the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School. He is a volunteer in the community, and spends most of his free time raising awareness for pediatric cancer and working to help find a cure through a public charity called Go4thgoal Foundation. Buffa is chairman of the board’s Finance and Buildings & Grounds committees, where he shares his expertise in finance and wealth management. “In my year and a half as a trustee, I learned a lot about serving in the public sector,” Buffa said. “The most challenging aspect for me has been how difficult and slow moving it is to effect change. Fiscal responsibility is a place where I plan to continue to focus my efforts as a trustee. In these times where unemployment rates are very high, many local residents are struggling to stay in their homes, and everyone is frustrated over exorbitant property tax increases year after year, I feel it is more important than ever that we are responsible and accountable for how we spend taxpayer dollars, while continuing to support the administrations efforts to keep our school among the most (continued on page 23) Go Green ...
