Waldwick April 20, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Two full slates have filed to run in the June municipal primary election in Waldwick. Republican Councilman Thomas Giordano and former Zoning Board of Adjustment Chairman Bruce Mitchell, a Democrat, will face off in the June 7 election for the mayor’s seat being vacated by Democrat Mayor Russell “Buddy” Litchult. The mayor announced in January that he would not seek reelection to a second term. In the council race, incumbent Republican councilmen Andrew Brennecke and Frank Palladino are being challenged by Democrats Richard Drury and Andrew Frey. Giordano, a 22-year borough resident, has been a councilman for seven years and served as council president in 2007. He was the 2007 Chamber of Commerce liaison, is the current chair of the Environmental Committee, and former chair of the Building and Grounds Committee. He received an associate’s degree in occupational studies from Thomas Edison State College and is a licensed funeral director in New York and New Jersey and is the manager of Mack Memorial Home in Secaucus. Giordano has been president of the fire department for the past 15 years, vice president of the Fire Department Exempt Association, a member of the Relief Association and associated with the Lions Club and Italian Club. He is serving his third term as trustee for the West Point Parents Club of New Jersey and is a former trustee of West Bergen Mental Healthcare. Giordano was honored by Mayor Jim Toolen as Volunteer of the Year in Bergen County representing Waldwick. He and his wife Marion, who grew up in Waldwick, have two children: Lt Thomas “TJ” Giordano, a 2006 graduate of Waldwick High School and a 2010 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, and a daughter, Ali, a junior at Waldwick High School. They are parishioners of St. Luke’s Church. Mitchell, a 24-year resident, served on the Waldwick Democrats, Republicans file full slates for elections Board of Adjustment for 19 years, including eight years as chairman. He also served for two years on the Bergen County Environmental Council and was a trustee of the Waldwick Education Foundation for eight years. A Democratic County Committee member since 1987, he served as municipal chairman for four years and currently serves as president of the Democratic Club of Waldwick. Mitchell holds BA and MA degrees from Ramapo College and an AS in Police Science from Bergen Community College and is employed as a high school US History teacher. He and his wife, JoAnn, have two daughters, Christine and Caroline. His father, Edward Mitchell, was a teacher in the Waldwick school system for over 30 years. Brennecke, a resident since 1955, is seeking election to a second term and chairs the council’s Public Works Committee. He holds a management position with a major cell phone corporation. He is a 33-year member and past president of the Waldwick Fire Department and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Brennecke and his wife of 35 years, Carol, have three children and one grandchild and are parishioners of Saint Luke’s Church. His mother was a school teacher at Saint Luke’s School, and his father was a WWII Navy veteran, stationed in Pearl Harbor. Drury, a lifelong borough resident and graduate of Waldwick High School, is manager of Prestige Lock in Waldwick. He has been a member of the Ser vice (continued on page 16) The right to name recreational facilities in Waldwick is now for sale to the highest bidder. The borough council last week authorized a four-year contract with Advantage 3 to market to private corporations the naming rights for the various sites. The likely prospects are Borough Park, Emmett Park and the municipal pool. Ted Bell Park and Veterans Park would be excluded from consideration, as would all townowned buildings. Councilwoman Anita Bozzo voted “no” on the resolution. “I realize we have the option of saying no (when a proposal is presented), but in principle, I don’t like the idea,” Bozzo said. According to Borough Administrator Gary Kratz, Advantage 3 would receive a 40 percent commission if a successful buyer is found and a facility renamed. The com- Council to seek naming proposals pany will get no payment unless the borough approves the offer given for the rights to name a facility. The governing body will retain the ability to determine the suitability of the proposals brought forth by the company. Any renaming would be for a set period of time and will not be perpetual. When he first presented the idea to the council in February, Kratz said that the additional revenue could potentially be used to put back items deleted from previous budgets, such as the concert series, which was attended by several hundred people. Kratz said that any funds generated would go into the general fund to be used as the council saw fit. “We could end up with a million,” Kratz said at that time. Kratz had said that the practice is a rising trend, noting that recent legislation now permits school boards to sell advertising on school buses.
