April 13, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 21 Religious Notes First Presbyterian Church announces services The First Presbyterian Church in Ramsey will celebrate Holy Week beginning on Palm Sunday, April 17 with a traditional service with soloist and bell choir at 9:15 a.m.; at 11 a.m. the All Family worship will begin with the Children’s Parade with palms and the music for the service will be led by the Chancel and Agape Handbell choirs. On Maundy Thursday, April 21 there will be an 8 p.m. worship and communion service. The Chancel Choir will provide the music. There will be personal reflection in the chapel from noon to 3 p.m. on Good Friday, April 22. A Solemn Worship service will be held at 8 p.m. Special music will be provided by Penny McCulloch on the harp, Donna Burdick as soprano soloist and Anita Bontekoe on the organ. Easter Sunday, April 24 worship with communion will be offered at 9:15 and 11 a.m. Festive music by The Agape Handbell Choir, the Chancel Choir, a brass quartet, the timpani and organ. Grace United celebrates Holy Week Grace United Methodist Church in Wyckoff will offer services on Holy Thursday, April 21 at noon and 8 p.m. The evening service will include a reenactment of the Last Supper. A Good Friday, April 22, service of the Tenebrae will be held at 8 p.m. in the chapel. On Easter Sunday, April 24 traditional services will be held at 9 and 11 a.m. There will also be a contemporary service celebrated at 9 a.m. Grace Methodist is located at 555 Russell Avenue in Wyckoff. For more information contact the church at (201) 891-4585 or www.gumc.org. Holy Week at Old Paramus Church Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church invites the community to its Holy Week services. A “Hosanna Day” Family Service will be held at 10 a.m. on April 17 and will include the distribution of palms and a procession from the parish hall to the sanctuary. Worship music will include selections from Handel’s “Messiah.” On April 21, Maundy Thursday, at 7:30 p.m., a service of personal meditation, prayers, and music will be held, with Communion served to all who wish to participate. The 21-voice Chancel Choir will undertake parts of a Mass titled “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace,” composed in 2001 by Englishman Karl Jenkins, and first performed by 150 voices at a concert in Wales. Recorded on DVD, it was released one week prior to 9/11. Two Good Friday services will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., The service will be based on “The Stones of Suffering.” At both services, each worshiper will be given a stone as a symbol of personal suffering, and join in a series of Scripture readings, prayers, hymns, and extinguishing of candles into darkness. On April 24, Easter Sunday, at 10 a.m. the church will celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. The sermon will be by Pastor Marsden, and special music by the choir, organ and brass, will concludes with the congregation joining the Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.” The church is located at 660 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood. Good Friday devotional walk set On Good Friday, April 22, at noon, the Allendale Community of Churches invites the public to its annual Good Friday Worship Service, “The Way of the Christ’s Passion” devotional walk. All are invited. This year’s walk will begin outside Archer United Methodist Church, 37 East Allendale Avenue, and end in the sanctuary of Guardian Angel Catholic Church, 320 Franklin Turnpike. Congregations from Archer United Methodist, Calvary Lutheran, Guardian Angel Roman Catholic, Highlands Presbyterian, Trinity Episcopal, and Zion Lutheran in Saddle River will participate in this event. Patterned after the Stations of the Cross, a procession of people, led by a large, roughly-hewn cross, will follow a prescribed route through Allendale. The procession will stop at 14 different locations for scripture reading and prayer. These 14 stations will recall Christ’s suffering and death and their contemporary implications. At the last station, a monetary offering for the Center for Food Action will be accepted. Lenten events underway Highlands Presbyterian Church’s traditional soup and bread suppers will be held on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. now through April 13. Bring a soup bowl and spoon and join the group for warm fellowship. An offering will be taken up for the church’s mission treasury, which is used for local, national, and global ministries. A video and discussion will follow each supper at 7 p.m. During Holy Week, a seder will be held on Maundy Thursday, April 21, at 6 p.m. The Good Friday, April 22 service will be at 8 p.m. Two services will be held on Easter Sunday, April 24 at 9 and 11 a.m. Highlands Presbyterian Church is located at 270 Franklin Turnpike in Allendale.
