Franklin Turnpike’s history to be discussed The Hermitage History Lecture Series will present “Franklin Turnpike: Three Hundred Years of Local and Through Traffic” on Wednesday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hermitage, 335 North Franklin Turnpike in Ho-HoKus. The route of the present Franklin Turnpike from Old Paramus Church to the New York/New Jersey border was once part of the King’s Highway of 1703, and the Albany Post Road’s western route from New York City to Albany. At first a wilderness trail, the road became a critical route during the Revolutionary War and was used by General George Washington and Aaron Burr. The colorful era of U.S. turnpikes, stagecoaches carrying mail and passengers, and wayside inns ended with the railroad. In 1854, the road was opened for public use. Carol Greene will draw from her award-winning book, “The Ramapough Chronicles: A 300-Year History of Mahwah, NJ and its Surrounds,” to discuss Franklin Turnpike. This program is open to the public. Admission is $5 and reservations are recommended. Visit thehermitage.org or call (201) 445-8311. Light refreshments will be served.
