Opening Day ceremonies will follow at Anderson Field. Waldwick resident Marty Noble, a former beat reporter for the Mets, will be the featured speaker. Mayor Russell “Buddy” Litchult will pitch the first ball. This year’s roster includes 575 players in 54 teams. Chamber to meet The Waldwick Chamber of Commerce will meet on Wednesday, April 20 at 8:30 a.m. at the Energy Zone Café, 136 Hopper Avenue in Waldwick. Students of the Month announced As part of the student recognition program, Waldwick High School and Waldwick Middle School have announced the Students of the Month for March. Faculty members made the selections. High school students who were honored are Diana Petrassi for athletics, Arianna Blanchard for physical education, and Ryan Davis for video production. Middle school students who received recognition are sixth grader Casey Kelly, seventh grader Francesca Raffaele, and eighth grader Caitlyn Ullman. Summer tennis instruction offered The Waldwick Tennis Instruction Program will run July 5 through 29 at Veteran’s Park. Participants, who should bring their own racket and balls, must be at least five years of age by Oct. 1, 2011. Players will be grouped by age. The cost of the program is $30 payable to the Borough of Waldwick. All residents 18 years or older must obtain a tennis badge from the borough clerk’s office for $20. Preregistration is required for the program. The application form and payment are due by June 1. Registration forms may be found at www.waldwickpd.org/forms/tennis.pdf. Parents are reminded that crossing guards are not on duty during the summer. Young children should be dropped off and picked up at Veteran’s Park by parents or other responsible adults. A sign-in and sign-out policy has been instituted and will be enforced to ensure children’s safety. Library to host Twitter workshop What is Twitter? How does it work? Find out on Thursday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. when the Waldwick Public Library presents “What Is All the Twitter About?” Erin Hummel, library media specialist for Waldwick Middle and High schools, will describe how Twitter and other social media are influencing politics around the globe, how companies and entrepreneurs leverage their businesses with Twitter, and how you can use it. Egg Hunt set Allendale/Waldwick PBA Local 217 will hold its 17th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 16 at the Waldwick High School Turf Football Field at 10 a.m. Rain date is April 23. Allendale and Waldwick children through grade five are invited. Egg gatherers will be divided into the following age groups: toddler through kindergarten, grades one through three, and grades four and five. Admission is free, and the Easter Bunny will be available to visit with the children. Children are encouraged to bring baskets to carry their eggs. Parents are encouraged to bring cameras. Book club to discuss ‘Brooklyn’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “Brooklyn” by Colm Toibin on Thursday, April 14 at 7:15 p.m. In the novel, Eilis Lacey, a smart young woman unafraid of hard work, must leave employment-poor Ireland to find a more lucrative existence in the booming New York City of the 1950s. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk at the library. The club welcomes new members and dropins regardless of residency. Boosters plan Golf Outing The Waldwick High School Athletic Association Booster Club will host the 2011 Warriors Golf Classic on Wednesday, June 29 at the Farmstead Golf and Country Club in Lafayette. The cost of the event is a donation of $125 per golfer and includes one round of golf, breakfast refreshments, a sit down lunch, and prizes. Donations sought for Attic Treasures Sale The Waldwick United Methodist Church at 25 Franklin Turnpike will hold its Annual Attic Treasure Sale on April 29 and 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations of items in good clean working condition (except clothing) will be accepted April 26 through 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. Receipts for donations are available upon request. Music parents hold Pasta Dinner benefit The Waldwick Music Parents Association will host its Eighth Annual Pasta Dinner and Cabaret Night fundraiser on Friday, May 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Waldwick High School, 155 Wyckoff Avenue. Student musical groups, including the Waldwick High School/Middle School Jazz Band, will provide entertainment that evening. Tickets may be purchased at the event or in advance for pick up at the door. Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors and students. Children under age five will be admitted free of charge. The event includes the all-you-can-eat dinner and dessert.
