The Waldwick High School baseball diamond was in tip-top shape for its opening game last week, thanks to volunteers from the Waldwick Baseball and Softball Association. The men, together with high school team members and coaches, repaired the infield and replenished clay to get the field ready for the opener. Bob Mayo, president of the baseball and softball group, said that when high school baseball head coach Frank Clark asked for assistance with the field, his organization stepped right up. He explained that the baseball association has endeavored to build strong ties between the town youth program and the high school sports program for years and that Clark had run a summer program for his group last year. Mayo credited Dan Moran and Joe Jannelli, who handle field maintenance for the group, John Biango and Dave Anderson with organizing the crew of approximately 45 volunteers. The board of education supplied the clay. “It took a lot of time to get it all coordinated, so we couldn’t start until last Tuesday, and were really under the gun. We worked quickly and got it done just in time. I’m happy about that,” said Mayo. and other ground-based observatories such as Brookhaven National Laboratory. The program is free and open to adults. No one under the age of 14 will be admitted. Space is limited and advance registration is required. For details, call (201) 652-5104.

(continued from page 4) installed. Other items may include work on the windows, doors and siding. Cowie said that how much of this work can be done will depend on the bids and the availability of funding. He also said that the WCA would have to conform to stricter guidelines because of the building’s historic status and because it is on state-owned land. “This type of work will cost substantially more than if you contracted similar work on non-state owned land,” Cowie explained. “Because the station is on state-owned land, all contractors have to be paid “prevailing wage,” which is often higher than what a typical contractor gets. There are also performance bonds, insurances and other fees that will eat up a lot of the funding. As for the contractors, we cannot just hire any contractor that would be otherwise sufficient. Because we have filed for Bergen County grants, the contractors must be on the Bergen County Historic Preservation-approved contractor list. The contractor must prove an extensive background in historic preservation work specific to the job they are hired to complete in order to work on the site. Their work must also be thoroughly inspected by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). All planned work must be reviewed and approved by SHPO, and they will oversee the progress to be sure that all work conforms to the Secretary of Interior standards. Many of these contractors are true craftsmen in their particular field and their fees often reflect that,” he added. Cowie said that fundraising will continue in 2011, using funds raised to date to begin work and tap into an available line of credit made available to the WCA to keep forward progress on the project in between available grant awards. “The Bergen County grant will not be awarded until late summer - early fall, and we have no idea just how much we will receive,” he said. Upcoming events will include the organization’s Annual Car Show, tentatively scheduled for June 12. He said two new events, a five-night Royal Caribbean Cruise to Bermuda (likely in the fall) and a casino night are being considered. In the mean time, the WCA asks that people continue to show their support by attending its fundraising events and make donations through its website: www.waldwickcommunityalliance.org or by mailing donations to: 19 W. Prospect Street, Suite 1, Waldwick, NJ 07463.
