The route of the present Franklin Turnpike from Old Paramus Church to the New York/New Jersey border was once part of the King’s Highway of 1703, and the Albany Post Road’s western route from New York City to Albany. The colorful era of U.S. turnpikes, stagecoaches carrying mail and passengers, and wayside inns ended with the railroad. In 1854, the road was opened for public use. Carol Greene will draw from her awardwinning book, “The Ramapough Chronicles: A 300-Year History of Mahwah, NJ and its Surrounds,” to discuss Franklin Turnpike. This program is open to the public.
