Upper Saddle River
Upper Saddle River resident Ashley Pagano, a Northern Highlands High School junior, chose Eva’s Village Women’s Halfway House for her Girl Scout Gold Award project. Over several months, Pagano shared her talent for design and her compassion for helping others, by transforming a common living area into a comfortable living room for the 36 women receiving treatment at Eva’s Village. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting and symbolized outstanding accomplishments in leadership, community service, career planning, and personal development. Pagano’s project included the organization and coordination of related fundraising efforts and the actual painting and decorating of the room. Pagano created a warm and comfortable space where the women can relax or play the many games that were also donated. The staff and clients were touched by Pagano’s enthusiasm and are very grateful for her hard work. “The constant feedback from everyone at Eva’s really made it obvious to me that people were inspired by the room,” Pagano said. She had many companies and individuals who supported this project. They are: Ramsey Shop Rite, Benjamin Moore Paint (Flanders), Bob’s Furniture Store (Secaucus), Coldwell Bank (Allendale and Saddle River), Bergen Highlands Church (Upper Saddle River), Ed Reinke Sr., Ed Reinke Jr., and Evelyn Rodriguez. To celebrate the Grand Opening, a game night was held for the women with refreshments. “This young lady has accomplished a wonderful feat and her compassion for the project was evident,” stated

Sister Gloria, executive director of Eva’s Village. “The women have a truly lovely place to relax and enjoy their free time.” Originally a New Jersey soup kitchen, Eva’s Village (www.evasvillage.org) was founded in 1982 by Msgr. Vincent E. Puma in response to the increasing incidence of homelessness in his Paterson parish. Msgr. Puma soon
realized that a soup kitchen was not enough. With the generous support of thousands of donors and private and government grants, Eva’s has grown into the most respected anti-poverty program in New Jersey.
