Grad Ball fundraiser under way The Glen Rock High School Grad Ball 2012 Committee is selling tickets to its cash prize contest at $50 each. The grand prize is $15,000, or 37.5 percent of ticket sales. There will also be 10 additional prizes of $500 each or 1.25 percent of ticket sales each. The Grad Ball, now in its 54th year, provides a safe, alcohol-free, celebratory event on high school graduation night. The event, which is staged in the high school gymnasium, is catered and includes entertainment. Proceeds from the cash prize fundraiser will benefit the Grad Ball. Auxiliary plans luncheon The Glen Rock Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its traditional Covered Dish Luncheon on Monday, Sept. 26 at 12:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the municipal annex on Maple Avenue in Glen Rock. Hospitality Chairman Genevieve Policano requests each member to bring a favorite casserole, salad, or dessert. Members are asked to bring a new or gently used saleable item to the meeting. The donated items will be sold after lunch. Funds raised will benefit the branch’s contribution for the Valley Hospital. Members are also invited to bring a guest to the luncheon. The group meets monthly on the fourth Monday. Group to discuss ‘Day after Night’ The book group at the Glen Rock Jewish Center will discuss Anita Diamant’s “Day after Night” on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. This novel details the experiences of four women who survived the Nazi regime in Europe, only to find themselves held in a detainment camp in Haifa in post-war Israel. This fascinating tale covers the aftermath of the Holocaust and the struggle that Jewish people of all nationalities faced as they worked to establish a new country. Holiday help offered to the recently bereaved The Stepping Stone group at Saint Catharine’s Church, 905 South Maple Avenue in Glen Rock, will offer “Getting through the Holidays” on Sunday, Nov. 13 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Hope Room at the church. A class about e-mail will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21, and an introduction to Facebook will be offered on Monday, Sept. 26. Both classes will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Students will need to have an e-mail address for the Facebook class. Registration is required, and space is limited. Community School offers ballet programs The Glen Rock Community School is still accepting registration for its fall ballet program. Classes are open to residents in surrounding communities and include instruction for beginners to advanced dancers, with pointe classes to those who qualify. All classes are held in the Glen Rock Middle School Little Theater. Preschool classes will be available beginning Oct. 7 and are held at the Community Church of Glen Rock. The students are encouraged to participate in the two performances held during the year, a holiday program in December, and the annual spring ballet concert in June. The program is under the direction of Denise Piccino, who has been teaching classical ballet for 30 years. Piccino has studied with the late Irine Fokine, at the American Ballet Theater School, and at the Joffrey School of Ballet. She is also the dance mistress of the Tricorne Dance Ensemble. High Holiday services offered Glen Rock Jewish Center will conduct four services during the High Holidays (Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur) that will be open and free of charge to the community. “Apples and Honey: A Taste of Rosh Hashanah,” will be held Thursday, Sept. 29 (the first day of Rosh Hashanah). The service, which will be held from 2 p.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m., is open to individuals, families, children, and adults. Learn how to play the shofar notes, have a rubber ducky tashlich, and get an aliyah to the Torah. The service is free and open to people of all faiths who wish to experience the spirit of the Jewish New Year. After the service, there will be a dessert nosh. Space for Apples and Honey is limited, so tickets, which are free, are required; call (201) 652-6624. The following services are also free and open to the community, and do not require tickets: Tashlich will take place Sept. 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the Duck Pond off Prospect Street in Glen Rock. Yom Kippur Yiskor will take place Saturday, Oct. 8 at approximately 1 p.m. Ne’ilah will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 6:15 p.m. and will include a sing-along Havdalah (end of Shabbat ceremony).
