Alexander Richard Assoian of Orlando, Florida, formerly of Wyckoff, died Sept. 8. He was 23. He was a classically trained musician since the age of three. He moved to Orlando to pursue an education and career in music. He opened and produced at The Music Lab in the Winter Park Village. He attended Full Sail University in Florida. He is survived by his wife Lauren Connery, his mother Michelle, his father Ron, and his siblings Adam and Katie. Arrangements were made by Baldwin Fairchild in Orlando, Florida. Father Joseph Stanislaus Bajorek, SDB of Ridgewood died Sept. 14. He was 95. He was the senior member of the Salesians’ New Rochelle Province. He was a graduate of Don Bosco Polish Institute, now Don Bosco Prep, in Ramsey, and entered Saint Joseph’s Novitiate at Newton. He made his first profession of vows as a Salesian of Don Bosco on Sept. 8, 1935, and completed his college studies at Don Bosco Seminary, graduating with a B.A. in 1938. He earned a master’s degree in English from Fordham University and a Ph.D. in education from New York University. He was ordained on July 1, 1945. He was assigned for one year to Don Bosco Prep as a teacher. He returned there for an 11-year stint from 1954 through 1965 as religious chaplain and teacher of English. He taught at Don Bosco College for eight years (1946-54). From 1965 to 1974, he was president of Don Bosco College Seminary in Newton. He was vice director of the Salesian Center in Columbus, Ohio. In 1979, he was assigned to the Salesian Provincial Residence in New Rochelle as director. He was the assistant pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mahwah from 19822002. In 2002, he retired to Don Bosco Prep and remained there until November 2010. He is survived by his nieces Joan Takacs of Melbourne, Florida, Julia Murdzek of Simsbury, Connecticut, and Lucia Melnychuk of Rye Brook, New York. Richard Noel Curving of Wayne, formerly of Hawthorne, died Sept. 14. He was 75. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a mail carrier with the Midland Park Post Office for 32 years. He was a member of the Midland Park VFW, and a member of Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church in Wayne. He is survived by his wife of Sharon (nee Verbeke) Curving, his children Rev. Deraney, MD, of Midland Park, formerly of Ridgewood, died Sept. 10. He was 85. He was a U.S. Army Medical Corps veteran of the Korean War. He served two terms as the director of internal medicine at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. He was a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Internal Medicine, The Academy of Medicine of New Jersey, the American Geriatric Society, and the American College of Angiology. He is survived by his wife Marita (nee Dempsey) Deraney, his children Maura Lapinski of Hardyston, Allen Deraney of Woodcliff Lake, Lawrence Deraney of Oakland, Hal E. Dursema of Yarmouth, Maine, Donna Zerni of Overland Park, Kansas, Kelly Links of New Hope, Pennsylvania, Kristina Whalen of Pleasantville, New York, and David Dursema of Mahwah; 17 grandchildren; and his sister Jeanette Hannie of Lafayette, Louisiana. Elwood of Barnegat, formerly of Waldwick and Hawthorne, died Sept. 4. He was 82. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a self-employed carpenter in the greater Bergen County area. He was a parishioner of Saint Mary’s R.C. Church in Barnegat. He is survived by his wife husband of Gail (nee McCrea) Elwood of Barnegat, his children Frank Elwood Jr., Brian Elwood, Karen Andronaco, Patrick Elwood, and Mark Elwood, 12 grandchildren, and his siblings John Elwood of Waldwick, Catherine Elwood of Manahawkin, and Margaret Elwood of Hawthorne. He was predeceased by his parents John and Fanny Elwood, his daughter Susan Gail Elwood, his brother Paul Elwood, and his nephew Jack Elwood. Arrangements were made by Browning Forshay Funeral Home in Hawthorne. Eustace Fotiu of Mahwah died Sept. 10. He was 81. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He attended City College of New York and received his bachelor of science in physics and mathematics from Wagner College in Staten Island, New York. He was an adjunct professor of pharmacy at Saint John’s University, and attended Columbia University School of Business and Management in New York City and Newark College of Engineering. He holds an honorary degree in dermatology. His career spanned 45 years in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry beginning with Avon and moving on to vice president of research and development at Pfizer Coty Division.
Maurice F. Deraney, MD
He spent 20 years with Revlon as executive senior vicepresident and vice-president of international business overseeing plants worldwide. He was senior vice president of Halston Bourgese and owned E.F. Consultants. He was an early pioneer in discovering alternatives to animal testing in cosmetic chemical testing and created and developed 12 patents. He held memberships with the American Chemical Society, American Academy of Dermatology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. He is survived by his wife Mary, his children Karen, Dennis, Ronald, and Huey, six grandchildren, and his siblings Ernest and Anna Marie. He was predeceased by his brothers Nicholas and Anthony. William Paul Harvey of Towson, Maryland, formerly of Ridgewood, died Sept. 13. He was 92. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII. His career was in the insurance business. He was a member of the Hobbyists. He is survived by his wife Alice Fitzgerald Harvey, his children Paul of Oregon House, California, Joan Mc Keon of Ridgewood, Kathy Lutz of Lutherville, Maryland, Jim of Wayne, Mary Alice Spadaro of Timonium, Maryland, Rosemary Bustard of River Vale, and Tom of Cornelius, North Carolina, 25 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and his sister Rosemary Oberlander of Greenwich, Connecticut. Edward S. “Ed” Hoffman of Wyckoff, formerly of Fair Lawn, died Sept. 12. He was 83. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by his wife Jeanette, and his children Madelyn of Flanders and Steven of Bow, Washington. He was a marketing professional with Sales Management magazine and Flood Hazard, Inc. Brian Patrick O’Connor of Ridgewood died Sept. 13. He was 70. He was a doctor of economics and head of IBM US Forecasting for 25 years, he owned Ridgewood Economic Consultants, and was an advisor to the New York State Assembly Ways and Means Committee, Economics Group for many years. He was a professor of economics at Saint Peter’s College for over 42 years. He is survived by his wife Mary, his children Maureen Grubb of Glen Rock and Michael O’Connor of Ridgewood, and two grandchildren. Arrangements were made by Feeney Funeral Home in Ridgewood.
