This is the only local grant program available to Bergen County historical agencies to fund local historical organizations and projects. All first-time applicants are encouraged to attend the grant workshop on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Bergen County Administration Building located at One Bergen County Plaza, Room 4B in Hackensack. General Operating Support Grants and Special Project Grants are now available. General Operating Support Grants are for established historical organizations with operating funds of at least $4,000 to assist with expenses that include salaries, contracted services, marketing and fundraising fees, utilities, staff training, maintenance of collections, and long-term planning. Special Project Grants are for specific history projects that contribute to the Bergen County historical record, promote local history, and assist and encourage the preservation of historic Bergen County. Projects that would be eligible include museum exhibits; publications; conservation of collections, archives, and historic cemeteries; preparation of National Register nominations for Bergen County historic properties; oral history projects; and production of history films or videos. Applicants must be non-profit organizations based in Bergen County. Local municipalities and libraries may not apply for GOS Grants, but are eligible for SP grants. Funds must be matched by applicants on a 1:1 basis; this applies to expenses incurred from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. The Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, actively seeks the participation of all persons and communities in its programs and services. County officials encourage local organizations that serve the culturally diverse local Bergen County population to create projects and programs that reflect the rich history of these communities. Applicants are encouraged to provide marketing and outreach to diverse communities and to produce programs that respond to the needs of ethnic and culturally diverse audiences. Organizations are required to submit a Declaration of Intent to Apply to the Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs by Sept. 26. Grant applications are due Oct. 28. County offers history grants The Ridgewood Police Department arrested a Paterson man who skipped a key element of his shopping trip to Stop and Shop. He filled the shopping cart but didn’t pay when he took it through check out. On Sept. 8 at 7:01 p.m., the Ridgewood police patrol responded to a call from the manager of the store who had detained a man who tried to leave Stop and Shop with a cart full of groceries. The man abandoned the cart and fled, but Patrolman Joseph Dibenedetto located a man who fit the suspect’s description. The man was apprehended and taken before the store manager, who identified him. The 46-year-old Paterson man was remanded to Bergen County Jail when he couldn’t make bail. Also on Sept. 8, a Ridgewood employee reported that the locks for the skate park at Lester Stable had been damaged and the penalty box wall had also been damaged. On Sept. 11, an Oak Street resident reported that the rear window of her vehicle had been broken overnight. Police are investigating. J. KOSTER Paterson man arrested
