Books sought for ‘Teach for India’ The Ridgewood Public Library’s Children’s Department is collecting books for the children of Dharavi, Mumbai. The books will be used in the Teach for India Program for children who are preschoolers through age 13. Donations may be brought to the children’s center through Oct. 4. Fiber Arts Festival, workshops set The third annual North Jersey Fiber Arts will be held on Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood at 113 Cottage Place. Each year, the North Jersey Fiber Arts Festival sponsors a project. Last year, they knitted and crocheted Duduza dolls on behalf of Our Chance International, an organization that provides for the medical needs of disadvantaged children. In 2009, the world’s longest scarf benefited the good works of Heifer International. This year’s project will support KasKare, an organization sponsoring Knit-A-Square for the AIDS orphans of southern Africa. The festival brings together fiber artists and vendors with expertise in knitting, spinning, quilting, rug hooking, and more. There will be over a dozen artists and vendors with 15 workshops and numerous demonstrations throughout the two days. Special workshops, including Amigurumi 101, Fixing Knitting Mistakes, and Rug Hooking will also be offered. The festival will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 30 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct.1. General admission is $8, $7 for seniors, and $5 for children, ages two through 12. Club welcomes new members The Woman’s Club of Ridgewood invites area women within a 19-mile radius of Ridgewood to a fall membership coffee on Friday, Sept. 16. This event will be held at the
clubhouse at 215 West Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. Hours will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. or from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Light fare and beverages will be served. Attendees will learn about the club’s mission and planned events. The Woman’s Club is a 501c3 organization for women who are at least 18 years of age. The club hosts monthly luncheons/socials, sponsors Meals on Wheels, raises money for local charities, hosts the annual House Tour and Children’s Theater, and sponsors Social Service families’ holiday wish lists and much, much more. a large-scale work combining German and English poetry that premiered in December 2009 in Leipzig. Svane is music director and organist for Christ Church in Ridgewood. He has received grants, prizes, and awards for music composition from such organizations as ASCAP, Meet the Composer, the American Music Center, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the Astral Foundation, and the Jerome Foundation. His extensive catalogue includes orchestral, chamber, operatic, and choral works. Craft and Street Fair set The Ridgewood Fall Craft and Art Street Fair will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18, from noon to 5 p.m. along East Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood. The fair, sponsored by the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department and promoted by P.J.’s Promotions, will be held rain or shine. Approximately 140 quality exhibitors from six states will be featured at the fair. Booths will be filled with a large selection of fine photography, art, and handcrafted items. There will be music all day and a large children’s area with a petting zoo, pony rides, and “inflatables.” A food court with festival foods of all kinds will be set up in front of the park. Biddy Basketball registration under way Ridgewood Biddy Basketball registration is now open and may be completed online at www.ridgewoodsports. org. The program is available to girls and boys in grade three through high school. A clinic for special needs children is also being offered. The registration deadline is Sept. 20. Learn to skateboard This fall, Ridgewood Parks and Recreation will offer skateboarding classes for children in grades one and up. Chamber Choir of Munich will perform an Oct. 16 premiere of “Requiem for the Unknown” by local composer Randall Svane. The work honor those who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. The performance will take place at the Prinzregenten Theater in Munich, under the baton of Philipp Amelung. Svane chose to set texts covering two millennia that deal with war, loss, grief, and reconciliation. The choral work, combined with oboe and cello commentary, explore profound texts by such luminaries as Sirach and William Blake. This is the second commission for Svane from Amelung. The first resulted from Amelung’s work as director of the Schola Cantorum Leipzig, a girls’ choir. Svane composed
