September 7, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 27 Ridgewood Notes Association, VFW set 9/11 memorial Ho-Ho-Kus Historical Association, Inc., in conjunction with the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Washington Elm Post 192 (Ho-Ho-Kus and Ridgewood) will conduct a ceremony in solemn remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93 at Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8:25 a.m., will take place in front of the HoHo-Kus Borough Hall, 333 Warren Avenue in Ho-Ho-Kus. There is no rain date. Everyone is invited to attend this Tenth Anniversary ceremony. Chamber hosts Car Show The Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Car Show on Friday, Sept. 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Memorial Park at Van Neste Square on East Ridgewood Avenue. Knights hold Stickball Tournament The member of Ridgewood Knights of Columbus Council 1736 will take to the streets on Saturday, Sept. 24 for Second Annual Stickball Tournament. This event will be held on Passaic Street beginning at 11:30 a.m. The entrance fee is $100 for a team of four. Trophies will be awarded for teams that place first, second, and third. Refreshments, hotdogs, and hamburgers will be served. There will also be a cash prize contest with proceeds benefitting the Ridgewood Police PBA and the New Jersey Firefighter’s Mutual Benevolent Association. Registration is open to all. MOMs Group to meet Our Lady of Mount Carmel MOMs Group will hold meet on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 9:15 a.m. in the parish center at 1 Passaic Street. Art instruction offered to adults The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will offer several adult art instruction classes at the Stable, located at 259 North Maple Avenue. New this fall, Charcoal and Pastels with Virginia Borghese will meet for six sessions on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Classes will begin Sept. 21. Watercolors with Lisa Miller will meet on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. for six classes. Acrylics with Sandi Chanoch will be offered on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. The Tuesday class will meet for six weeks; the Thursday session for five weeks. Classes begin the week of Sept. 19. The cost is $80 for the six-session classes, and $70 for the five-session class. An additional $10 fee will apply to non-residents. Activities, classes offered to preschoolers The Ridgewood Recreation Division is offering preschoolers a variety of classes and activities this fall. Back by popular demand, U.S. Sports Institute will provide Sports Squirts. This program is designed to introduce children, ages three through five, to a variety of sports in a safe, structured environment. All games and activities promote hand/eye coordination, balance, agility, and movement. In addition to learning basketball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, and soccer, participants will develop social and communication skills, while they have fun. One-hour sessions will be offered at Veterans’ Field North on Wednesdays beginning Sept. 21. Choose from among the following time slots: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., 10:45 to 11:45 a.m., 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., or 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. The six-week session will run through Oct. 26. The cost is $140 per child and all equipment will be provided by U.S. Sports Institute. Happy Feet Dance Instruction for children age three through five is an introduction to basic ballet positions and thematic movement. The cost is $60 for the six-week session. Formal dance attire is not necessary. The class will meet at The Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue, on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 27. My First Art Class with Abrakadoodle is for children ages 20 to 42 months old with a caregiver. Participants explore painting, drawing, sculpting, and reading, and play art games. Activities engage the senses and build fine motor skills, language, creativity, and cognitive skills. The class will meet at The Stable on Tuesdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. beginning Sept. 20. The $110 fee for the six-week session includes all safe, non-toxic Crayola materials. Children ages three through five years old may participate in Mini Doodler Art Explorers with Abrakadoodle on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:15 a.m. beginning Sept. 21. Classes will be held at The Stable. This art class focuses on fun while building self-confidence and freedom of expression. This mixed-media class will include painting, printing, sculpting, collage making, and more. The $110 fee for the six-week session includes all materials. Happy Piano teaches students who are ages three through five the basics of music theory and how to play familiar songs on the piano. The class will meet at The Stable on Thursdays from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. beginning Sept. 22. Each child is provided with a keyboard to use in class. The cost is $95 for the five-week session. Classes will be held at The Stable, located at 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. Explore Science: The Ups and Downs of Gravity is for students in kindergarten through grade three. Sessions will be held on Mondays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. beginning Sept. 19. Students will learn about this invisible force with hands-on experiments. The fee is $80 for five classes and includes all materials. Children in kindergarten through grade two may join Pottery with Abrakadoodle on Thursdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Classes will begin Sept. 22. Young artists will be introduced to a variety of ways to create three-dimensional art with kid friendly modeling compounds. The fee is $110 for six classes. All materials are included. Acrylic painting for students in grades two through five will meet on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. beginning Sept. 20. Participants will receive individual attention and will be provided with goals and objectives to help them find their own personal approach to painting. The cost for the six classes is $54; materials are additional, and a list will be provided at registration. Beginning Sept. 21, Wednesday drawing classes will be offered to children in grades two through five from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Students will work at their own level using drawing pencils and pastels. Charcoal drawing and pastel painting will be offered to children in grades four through eight on Mondays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. beginning Sept. 19. Students will learn drawing and composition basics while using charcoal, pencil, and pastels. The fee is $50 for the five classes; materials are additional, and a list will be provided at registration. New this fall is a calligraphy workshop for children in grades four and up. The class will meet on Tuesdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. beginning Sept. 20. Students will learn the art of beautiful handwriting as they create invitations, greeting cards, and more. The cost is $70 for the six classes; materials are additional and may be obtained from instructor for an additional $20 at the first class. Nature in the Village with New Jersey Audubon will be offered to children in kindergarten through grade two on Thursdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Classes, which will begin Sept. 22, will include seasonal nature discussions, hands-on crafts, and nature walks. New topics will be provided weekly. The $80 cost includes five classes and all materials. The Aviation Club with Hobby Quest is open to children in kindergarten though grade five on Fridays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Classes will begin Sept. 23. Participants will gain knowledge of the fascinating world of aviation and learn how to read and evaluate construction plans and use various hobby tools as they create and operate a variety of air models. Biddy Basketball registration under way Ridgewood Biddy Basketball registration is now open and may be completed online at www.ridgewoodsports. org. The program is available to girls and boys in grade three through high school. A clinic for special needs children is also being offered. The registration deadline is Sept. 20. IAUC plans meeting The Irish American Unity Conference, Chapter 5th and 9th CD, will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at Christ Church, 105 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. The IAUC is a human rights organization working for peace with justice in a reunited Ireland.
