Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • October 19, 2011 The Glen Rock Borough Council has adopted an ordinance that will charge people who require the services of the Glen Rock Public Defender a maximum of $200 when the defender appears in court. The ordinance was adopted at the Oct. 12 meeting of the Glen Rock Borough Council. Public defenders are attorneys who are retained by the municipality for a relatively small stipend and represent defendants before local magistrates. The ordinance adopted last week provides that defendants who are actually indigent may apply for a public defender and have the fee waived, but requires those who are able to pay to do 4-29-09 karen/janine so. “Any person applying for representation by a municipal EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) public defender shall pay an application fee to the munici3 x .75 pal court of not more than $200,” the ordinance states. “The municipal court judge may waive any required application fee, in whole or in part, if the court determines in its discretion that the application fee represents an unreasonable burden upon the person seeking representation.” J. Glen Rock Roundup Uncover the borough’s past Historian Sue Tryforos will present “Uncovering Glen Rock’s Past” to the Glen Rock Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary on Monday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. Tryforos, an active member of the historical and preservation society, will discuss Glen Rock’s history and the society’s plan for the future, its archives and publications, and work currently under way in organizing early town maps and various historical data. A 30-year resident, Tryforos lives in a historical house in the Prospect Park section of Glen Rock. She has a degree in art history from McGill University and was appointed town historian in January 2011. The group will meet at the municipal annex, 678 South Maple Avenue. Theater company holds fundraiser The Glen Rock Inn, 222 Rock Road, is offering a dining fundraiser to benefit The Glen Rock High School Theatre Company through Nov. 11. Supporters of the theatre company may purchase gift certificates to the restaurant in $25, $50 and $100 denominations. Net proceeds from the sale will be donated to the organization. In addition to its annual fall production, the company presents a festival of original plays written and produced by students, every spring. Perry will present “How to Plant Seeds Indoors and Raise the Seedlings Successfully.” Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a contest for a gift certificate for Perry’s Florist. League sets Candidates Night The League of Women Voters of Glen Rock will sponsor a forum for mayor and council candidates on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The forum will be held in the council chamber at the borough hall. On Nov. 8, Glen Rock residents will select a mayor and two councilmen. Candidates will present their views on the issues in response to a question posed by the League of Women Voters and questions from the audience. There are two mayoral candidates seeking election: incumbent Mayor John van Keuren and Mark McCullough. Three candidates, including incumbents Pamela Biggs and Art Pazan, and challenger Howard Fox are vying for the two available borough council seats. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government. As part of its voter services, the organization registers new voters and organizes a Candidates Night for contested elections. Commission offers Green Film Festival The Glen Rock Environmental Commission will show a series of award-winning documentaries to help residents understand the health and environmental impacts of the water, food, and plastic products in their everyday lives. Films will be shown at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27 and Nov. 10 at the Glen Rock Public Library located at 315 Rock Road. “Gasland” will be shown on Oct. 27. This film details the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history which is sweeping across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of “fracking,” or hydraulic fracturing, has unlocked a “Saudia Arabia of natural gas” just beneath us – but is fracking safe? This film provides information that ExxonMobile and other natural gas companies don’t want the public to hear. On Nov. 10, the featured film will be “Bag it: Is Your Life Too Plastic?” The film has been garnering awards at film festivals across the nation. What started as a documentary about plastic bags evolved into a wholesale investigation into plastics and their effect on waterways, oceans, and people. A discussion will follow each film screening. The Glen Rock Environmental Commission consists of seven volunteer residents who seek to educate residents, advocate for a cleaner and healthier community, and advise the municipal government about the environmental impacts of proposed actions. County surrogate to address Activities Club The Activities Club will host guest speakers Bergen County Surrogate Michael Dressler and Meg Emery on Oct. 18. The meeting will be held in Fellowship Hall at the Community Church of Glen Rock, 354 Rock Road, at 1:30 p.m. Members and guests of members are invited. Dressler will discuss the importance of wills, probate procedures, administration of estates, estate tax consequences, power of attorney, medical directives, and guardianship. A question and answer segment will be included. Emery will discuss the New Jersey Outlaws, a new semipro hockey team operating out of the Ice Vault in Wayne.
