Christmas Tree Lighting celebration set The Glen Rock Christmas Tree Lighting festivities will take place starting at 4 p.m. on Nov. 25 in front of the Boiling Springs Bank Building on Rock Road, with the actual tree lighting set for 4:30. The event will feature a holiday singalong with Eileen Pearson and Friends, and Santa Claus is expected to arrive and delight the children around 4:15 p.m. The ceremony has been a favorite in downtown Glen Rock for the past 16 years and is always eagerly anticipated by children and their parents. During the event, Smoothie King from a few doors away on Rock Road will be selling holiday flavored smoothies and will donate a portion back to the Glen Rock Chamber of Commerce. Interfaith Thanksgiving Service set The 42nd Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held at The Community Church of Glen Rock, 354 Rock Road in Glen Rock, on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. Refreshments and fellowship will follow. Attendees are requested to bring non-perishable food items and monetary contributions for local food pantries. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church presents‘Once upon a Mattress’ Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, under the direction of Five Corners Theatre Company, will present a benefit production of “Once upon a Mattress” at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4. The performances will be held at Glen Rock Community Church at 354 Rock Road. Anyone who thought they knew the story of “The Princess and the Pea” may be in for a walloping surprise. Attendees will discover that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab and that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night. Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic provides some sidesplitting shenanigans. Tickets, which are $12 for adults, and $10 for senior citizens and students up to age 18, may be purchased at the church on Sundays from noon to 1 p.m. or by calling (201) 444-6598. Local television to air event coverage Glen Rock Television is now airing the Glen Rock Halloween Parade and the Veterans Day ceremony. Tune in to watch on Channel 77 Cablevision or 32 FiOS. The bridge group meets on Tuesdays, except during the third week when the general membership meets. All skill levels from beginner to expert are represented. On Dec. 14, the club will hold its annual Christmas/Chanukah luncheon at the Brownstone. Academy hosts Open House Academy of Our Lady in Glen Rock will hold a pre-kindergarten and kindergarten Open House on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. The school offers pre-kindergarten programs for children ages two through four. Sessions are two, three, four, or five days, with additional full-day options, morning care, and after care. Kindergarten choice is half- or full-day with a full academic program including math, reading, and religion, complemented with computer, library, music, art, physical education, and Spanish. Seniors plan Holiday Lunch The Glen Rock Seniors will host a Holiday Lunch on Dec. 7 at La Neve’s in Haledon. Along with lunch, the afternoon will include dancing, and a sing-along with entertainment by Joe Zisa and friends. Legion seeks Boys State candidates The Glen Rock American Legion Post 145 is seeking candidates for New Jersey Boys State 2012. Boys State is an annual citizenship program that has been held annually in New Jersey since 1946. To be eligible, boys must be Glen Rock residents and juniors in high school. Boys with outstanding character and leadership qualifications and who will have a serious attitude toward an intensive citizenship training program are encouraged apply. Legion sells Entertainment Books The American Legion is offering Entertainment Books for 2012. The cost of the book is $30 and may be delivered locally or picked up anytime.
