November 23, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 13 Merchants support Shop the Rock with free bags by John Koster Cooperating merchants will support the “Shop the Rock” campaign by giving out free durable shopping bags to the first 2,000 shoppers who spend more than $25 at their stores and shops on Nov. 26. “I did my own social survey -- I gave out zero bags for five days,” said Geno Paolucchi of Glen Rock Paint & Hardware. “Out of the 500 or so customers I served during that time, I had about seven get upset, but everybody else said that it was no big deal and they could cope. We give away 30,000 bags a year and I figure if I can save on a couple of bags, I can reduce my footprint on the environment.” “I think it’s a smart thing to control all the waste we see around us,” said Dee Stevens of Grow-Cery, a toy store on Rock Road. “I don’t use any plastic whatsoever, because when you’re dealing with kids, I don’t think plastic is the smartest thing to have around. We use paper.” Stevens also has some durable bags of her own, but will cooperate with the program to distribute Glen Rock’s own bags on Shop the Rock day. “This promotion has two goals: to strengthen the local economy and reduce or community’s carbon footprint,” explained Glen Rock Environmental Commission Commissioner Cindy Mehallow. “Shopping local eliminates trips to the mall and big-box retailers, which in turn reduces (continued on page 16) The Glen Rock Borough Council show off their Shop the Rock reusable shopping bags at a recent council meeting.
