Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren decided, in cooperation with Glen Rock Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ronald Verducci, to offer the borough’s children a safe Halloween celebration on Friday, Nov. 4, even as Public Service Electric & Gas repair crews from Alabama and Florida were restoring power to some borough households. Despite short notice and the fact that some homes still had no telephone or Internet service, the event was a sunlit success as more than 200 children and a dozen adults showed up in elaborate or improvised costumes. Children fronted for the adult reception team including Dr. Verducci as The Coach, Mayor van Keuren as Judge Darth Vader, “Custer Survivor” author John Koster as the eponymous Sergeant August Finckle of Custer’s 7th Cavalry, and Glen Rock Borough Administrator Lenora Benjamin as a contrarian black cat who brought some good luck -- and a bag of candy. Children filled up their sacks at the steps of borough hall and then fanned out to trick-or-treat with cooperating Rock Road merchants, who put pumpkin posters in their store windows.
