Junior Girls Scouts honored for cleanup posters
by John Koster Ridgewood’s Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 152 at Ridge School won the praise and endorsement of the Ridgewood Village Council for their work in making and installing posters to urge residents and visitors not to litter. Three of Scouts – Elizabeth Hannafey, Erin McCarthy, and Sophia Swanson -- offered a joint statement at the council’s recent work session. The other three Scouts – Erica Heckel, Jennifer Lee, and Gabby Musarra – presented a sample poster to the council. “We were working with Tim Cronin and Nancy Bigos from the Department of Parks and Recreation to make Ridgewood an even more beautiful place to live and play,” the girls told the council, seconded by Troop Leader Alina Swanson. “We are here to give you one of our posters: Be Green, Not a Litter Machine. Keep Ridgewood Parks and Fields Clean!!” “We’ve noticed that there is always litter – soda bottles, water bottles, snack wrappers, and lots of other junk – everywhere we look. This is upsetting to us and we decided to do something about it by starting our own antilitter campaign as part of our Bronze Leadership Award. “Last week, we hung our posters on garbage bins at many parks and fields throughout the village. We hope everyone will stop and look at our colorful posters and say, ‘Hey, I will not be a litter bug anymore!’ “We have spoken with many community leaders and sports coaches that use the fields and have partnered up with other Girl Scout troops to get more people talking about our litter problem. “We’ll be back in the spring to let you know how we’re doing. Thank you!”
