VFW hosts Coins for a Cause Area residents are encouraged to donate their spare coins to Washington Elm VFW Post 192 (Ho-Ho-Kus/ Ridgewood) by participating in Coins for a Cause on Nov. 12. Participants should visit Boiling Springs Savings Bank, 531 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Those who use Boiling Springs’ free coin counting machine and donate their coins will support Post 192’s mission. One hundred percent of the coins donated will benefit Post 192. The VFW welcomes citizens of the United States who have been honorably discharged from the armed forces and who have served, or are on active duty, in a combat zone, received imminent danger pay, or received special pay for duty subject to hostile fire. The VFW seeks to preserve and strengthen camaraderie among its members. The organization assists worthy comrades, perpetuates the memory and history of the dead, and assists their widows and orphans. World Communion Day set Church Women United of Ridgewood and Vicinity will host World Communion Day 2011 at The Unitarian Society, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood, on Friday, Nov. 4 at 9:30 a.m. Coffee and cake will be served. The theme for this year’s World Community Day, “Living Our Faith: Unlocking Action,” will explore the writings of Micah and Matthew on justice, mercy, and Jesus’ challenge to examine hypocrisy. The Reverend Harry Green, a Unitarian Universalist minister will serve as guest speaker. Reverend Green earned his master of divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. After he retired from district work in 2006, Reverend Green began serving part-time at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Pomona, New York. Since 1941, women of the Church Women United Movement have held a vision of Christian unity and prayerful action. CWU was founded as a racially, culturally, and theologically inclusive Christian women’s movement to celebrate unity in diversity and work for peace in the world. Adult art instruction available The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will offer adult art instruction classes at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue. Watercolors with Lisa Miller will be held on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Classes will begin Nov. 16. Sandi Chanoch will offer two sessions of her acrylics class. One session will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning Nov. 8; the evening session will be held on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Nov. 3. The cost for each six-session class is $80. Non-residents will be charged an additional $10 fee. There will be an additional charge for materials; a list will be provided at registration. The training comes as part of a $5.1 million National Telecommunications and Information Administration American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant to support the New Jersey State Library’s Broadband Technology Opportunity Program. The program’s goal is to make New Jersey’s libraries strategic job-creating facilities by adding computer workstations, upgrading Internet connectivity, and providing job search assistance and workforce development programs. A consortium of New Jersey’s community colleges will deliver training using its existing curriculum. Additional online content and training developed by New Jersey Network will also be available. More than five million New Jersey residents will be served through this initiative. School vacation camp offered The Ridgewood YMCA will offer School Vacation Camp for children in kindergarten through grade five on Thursday, Nov. 10 and Friday, Nov. 11. YMCA membership is not required. The camp offers affordable and quality camp time for children during public school holidays. Kids enjoy daily recreational and educational activities, including swimming, arts and crafts, and theme days. The program is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours also available. The cost for camp is $55 per day for Ridgewood YMCA members and $75 per day for nonmembers. Computer training for job seekers offered Bergen Community College will begin offering free classes to job seekers at the Ridgewood Public Library to improve their computer and job search skills. The classes will focus on the basic computer skills needed by every job applicant today. All courses, which will be delivered at a basic user level, are four hours and are built around workforce development skills. Classes are scheduled as follows: Web-based E-mail, Nov. 16; Job Search on the Internet, Nov. 23; Creating Resumes and Cover Letters Part I, Nov. 30; and Creating Resumes and Cover Letters Part II, Dec. 7. Biggs graduated from Glen Rock High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in languages and linguistics from Georgetown University. She and her late husband, Tim, raised their two children, Ashley and Brett, in Glen Rock. Fox is the associate director of management information systems and has been a software developer with a leading Internet credit-based firm and an analyst in a leading travel company. He received a degree in business administration from the University of Albany with a minor in political science, and an MBA in finance from Baruch College of CCNY. He and his wife have three children and a total of 17 relatives in the borough. Pazan, a two-term incumbent, holds a degree from Hofstra University and a master’s degree from NYU. He worked in the food industry and with international food companies for more than 20 years and is fluent in Spanish. Pazan moved to Glen Rock from Teaneck in 1990 and his four children attended the Glen Rock schools. He has been active in the Glen Rock Baseball Association, where he worked with the Glen Rock Board of Education on safety improvements. Pazan is an active member of the Glen Rock Jewish Center, where he cooks Sabbath meals for the congregation, and, as an accomplished musician, performs at the services.
