Glen Rock May 25, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Gardeners host award-winning photographer Goodell by John Koster The Glen Rock Garden Club recently heard a discussion about photographing wild birds, a featured adjunct to any garden, from Ridgewood author and award-winning photographer Douglas Goodell. Goodell, who provided some of the photos for the children’s book, “Duck Enough to Fly,” and for “Jungle of the Maya,” has had works published in plumage can change color depending on what the birds eat. Some viewers in past shows thought he had re-touched a bird to show blue plumage, but he explained that the photograph was accurate and the blue plumage was caused by dietary factors. Good bird photos require patience, he said. Goodell added that he sometimes has to wait for an hour or more to get that perfect shot of a bird in motion or in a picturesque position. Other birds are more cooperative. Goodell noted that Venice, Florida, is a favorite venue for photographing the blue heron. Photographers come from all over the world with enormous zoom lenses and expensive cameras to capture images of the herons, especially in the morning. “It’s like a photography class,” Goodell said. “Many people are just waiting to see the blue herons, and during midday, it’s all empty without a human being in sight.” Egrets, once hunted to near extinction for their elegant feathers, are now making a comeback and now have a symbiotic relationship with some humans. Goodell said he had seen two egrets standing on either side of a fisherman, where they waited for his discarded fish. But birds still need help. Goodell noted that the red knot, which migrates from Canada to Argentina and flies 11,000 miles each year, has been dangerously reduced due to the harvesting of horseshoe crabs, which provide the bird’s primary food source. Horseshoe crabs are harvested for fish bait or so their blood can be used in medical testing. He advocated reduced crab harvesting and alternative bait sources to preserve the delicate balance among birds, crabs, and people. The members of the Glen Rock Garden Club enjoyed Goodell’s talk and admired his many striking photographs of birds, including those featuring the black-capped chickadee. Club members who took part in the Mother’s Day Plant Sale reported that results were better than last year, and that even nurserymen showed up to buy plants not usually found in New Jersey. The club uses proceeds to decorate public buildings with plantings and with wreaths at Christmas. The Glen Rock Garden Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:45 at the Glen Rock Annex near borough hall. Membership is open to anyone interested in gardening. The club also holds a June picnic and a January banquet. New members are eagerly sought.
