‘Bridesmaids’ takes comic path to a focused life
by Dennis Seuling “Bridesmaids,” co-written by and starring Kristen Wiig, follows the events leading up to a wedding that endanger a lifelong friendship. Annie (Wiig) and Lillian (Maya Rudolph) have been best friends since grade school. Now in their early thirties, they have become so close that one instinctively knows what the other is thinking and feeling, and they are uninhibited about sharing their insecurities, fears, and hopes. Lillian announces to Annie that she has become engaged and asks her closest pal to be her maid of honor. Annie accepts, but the impending marriage causes her to take stock of her own life, which isn’t looking very promising. Her bakery business has just failed, wiping out most of her savings in the process. She’s in a “relationship” with a guy (an uncredited Jon Hamm) who is up front about telling her it’s all about the sex and she shouldn’t expect any kind of commitment. She’s sharing an apartment with a strange brother and sister (Matt Lucas, Rebel Wilson) who treat her like a child rather than an equal. And she can’t stop herself from giving unwanted advice to customers in the jewelry store where she works. She looks forward to throwing herself into planning the wedding with Lillian and bridesmaids Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Becca (Ellie Kemper), Megan (Melissa McCarthy) and Helen (Rose Byrne), but becomes increasingly miffed at wealthy and beautiful Helen’s attempts to control the planning. This is definitely an ensemble piece, with each of the bridal party given a memorable scene or two. As is to be expected in an R-rated comedy, the language is earthy, the gags often predicated on bodily functions, and there is one graphic sex scene. The R rating gives the writers the freedom to produce some hilarious dialogue, not the carefully sanitized type you find in comedies that dance around titillation to preserve that coveted PG-13. This doesn’t mean “Bridesmaids” is overly raunchy. It simply means the adults in the movie behave the way they probably would in real life. The comedy is dependent not only on racy language, but on the well-developed characters. Wiig’s Annie is an attractive young woman hamstrung in her social relationships by insecurities and a feeling that she can do no better. Viewers feel for her, and react to her frustrations. When we laugh, we’re laughing not at a (continued on Crossword page)
