May 25, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 21 Glen Rock Roundup Parenting seminar offered The office of parish and family life at Saint Catharine’s Church in Glen Rock will hold a free seminar on for parents of teens on Tuesday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the community hall, 905 South Maple Avenue. Glen McCall, director of youth ministry at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood, will present a talk about the top 10 things parents of teens need to know. All are welcome. Volunteers sought The committee for the Annual Independence Day Parade fundraiser is seeking volunteers to help stuff the 4,500 envelopes with tickets for the fundraiser contest. The contest, along with donations from local businesses, underwrites the cost of the parade. The prizes may be viewed on Facebook at glenrockparade and include a television, original oil and watercolor paintings, an underwater digital camera and gift cards. Individuals or organizations interested in volunteering or in participating in the parade may contact Jason Raser at (917) 715-0089 or glenrockparade@gmail.com Religious school accepts registration Registration is open for the 2011-12 school year at the Glen Rock Jewish Center Religious School. Classes will begin on Sept. 11. Registration for the kindergarten program and for Sunday school for children in first and second grade is open to non-members. The classes meet every Sunday morning from September through June. Center members and prospective members are invited to register for Hebrew School, for students in grades three through seven. The two-hour classes meet twice a week and include Hebrew language, prayer, history, current events, and music. All programs include parent participation, workshops, and trips. In addition, the school has a library/computer lab that supports Hebrew programs for reading, history, and holidays, and a book collection that complements the curriculum. A special education teacher is on staff for children with special needs. Prospective members may contact the center at membership@grjc.org to find out if they qualify for an incentive program, which offers reduced rates for new members. Trees campaign underway The Glen Rock Tree Trust announced it is nearing its goal for the 11 Neighbors 11 Trees campaign, the group’s year long effort of the Glen Rock Tree Trust to raise funds to plant 11 trees on public land throughout Glen Rock in memory of the 11 Glen Rock residents who died on Sept. 11, 2001. To date the trust has received donations or pledges of trees from Cub Scout Pack 1, the Hamilton School Home School Association, the Girl Scouts of Glen Rock, PSEG, The Environmental Club of Central School and several individuals. The Trust is looking for contributions from individuals of any size and is seeking donations from organizations that might want to underwrite the cost of a tree. The trees will planted in time for the tenth anniversary of 9-11. Each tree costs $200. Correction: Activities Club picnic The Activities Club will hold its annual picnic on June 6 from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the pavilion at Glen Rock Pool, rain or shine. Library offers reusable tote bags The Glen Rock Public Library is offering reusable library tote bags at the circulation desk for $2 each. Patrons can now protect borrowed items from snow and rain with reusable library totes. The library is joining the Green Up Glen Rock movement by making these bags available to patrons. The library has long been promoting recycling by allowing patrons to reuse books, recorded books, music, and videos. Some items have been borrowed more than 100 times. They are now expanding the green effort by allowing patrons to recycle by using library totes. The library will no longer supply plastic bags. Reusable totes will be the only option. Tote bag sales are self-supporting. The Glen Rock Public Library is located at 315 Rock Road. Seniors plan trips The Glen Rock Senior Citizens Club will visit Monmouth Racetrack on Friday, June 17. A buffet luncheon at the Turf Club is included. Jackets are required for men. Jeans and shorts are not permitted. The bus will depart from Wilde Park at 10 a.m. The cost for the day is $39 for club members, $42 for non-members. For reservations and information, call Ed at (201) 4459238. ESL offered at library The Glen Rock Library’s two ESL (English as a Second Language) discussion groups meet each week through June. These informal sessions use the monthly “Easy English News.” Both sessions are led by Glen Rock volunteers Shona Perry, who facilitates the group on Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m., and Kate Mowlem, who leads the group on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The library is located at 315 Rock Road.
