Franklin Lakes Club member experiences ‘road food’ at its best topped burgers with fried eggs at camping trips, tailgates, and other occasions, and it’s been a hit. Haven Brothers is reportedly one of the oldest restaurants on wheel in the United States. It began operations as a horse drawn cart in 1893. Every evening at 4:30 p.m., the proprietor wheels the 1949 Fred W. Morse diner car (the third wagon in the diner’s history) to the corner of Dorrance and Fulton streets next to the Providence City Hall and Kennedy Plaza. During our search for Haven Brothers, we had the joy of coincidentally pulling up behind it at a traffic light while approaching the downtown area. We followed it to its parking space and watched the diner get set up for the night’s business. After it closes, the Car Show and Flea Market May 25, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • Page 19 The Haven Brothers Diner in Providence, Rhode Island. by Ron Panicucci In many past issues of the Bow Tie Bulletin, I have written about the Panicucci road trips. On many occasions, I’ve included a description of some of our culinary highlights. All of my road trip itineraries include some interesting local food establishments, since, just like with many VCCA events, our destinations or daily plans revolve around food. Those who know me well know I’ll go out of my way to avoid a chain facility. It continues to amaze me how people travel from around the world to visit New York, they have some of the world’s best food choices, yet Times Square features a (chain restaurant). What a sin! Lately, I’ve had clients and friends call me while on a trip to ask where they should go to eat. Two of my favorite sources are www.roadfood.com and www.hollyeats. com. I always research these sites before heading out on the road. I’ve also amassed a collection of lists from publications, websites, and the travel and food-related cable stations. In this issue, I’m featuring Haven Brothers, a traveling diner in Providence, Rhode Island. I have had the pleasure of enjoying a “Gus Burger,” which features a fried egg topping. Since eating that burger, I’ve diner is wheeled away to Federal Hill. The diner operates downtown from 4:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. and then on Spruce Street from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. According to Michael Stern of Roadfood.com, “To say that the clientele at this 112-year-old establishment, which pulls up to the front of city hall every night at 5 p.m., is a colorful group of people is a ridiculous understatement. Among the regulars are big-shot city politicians, police officers, drunks who need to sober up when the bars close, and street people who range from wildly entertaining early in the evening to wild and scary after midnight.” If you are traveling to the Providence, Rhode Island area, I can’t imagine how you could resist visiting Haven Brothers. Allendale Festival Day and Show Car Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 10 AM – 4 PM (rain or shine) Hosted by: Allendale Chamber of Commerce Open to all years, makes and models of cars and trucks NJ Transit parking lot (at the end of West Allendale Avenue) Allendale, New Jersey Please arrive between 8:30-9:00 am Advance Registration $15 • Day of Event $20 Spectators Free Admission Prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd Best in Show For additional information & registration form call the Allendale Chamber of Commerce Nickie Lisella (201) 825-0500 • www.allendalechamber.com PLATINUM SPONSOR: DIAMOND SPONSOR: Randy’s Auto Repair 11 Crescent Ave, Waldwick (Formerly located at Citgo Station in Midland Park) PLATINUM SPONSOR: Randy Mayo, proprietor 201-445-2722 Complete Auto Repair All major credit cards accepted.
