People of all ages are invited to hear certified senior advisor Kathy Kuzma, who will speak in the church’s education at 660 East Glen Avenue at Route 17 South. For over 15 years, Kuzma has provided assistance to seniors, the homebound, and their caregivers, so individuals can identify appropriate resources to meet their needs. Communication is an integral part of the aging process, and Kuzma brings a wealth of knowledge and life experience to this event. Coffee and refreshments will be served. Carnival Day set Christ Church Ridgewood will host a Carnival Day on Sunday, May 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the church lawn, 105 Cottage Place. The event is open to the community and admission is free. In the event of rain, the carnival will move inside to the Great Hall. The event will include games and balloons. Swim lessons available The Ridgewood YMCA is now offering swim packages for swimmers interested in private or group lessons. The concentrated private swim package includes seven half-hour lessons over four weeks and is open to swimmers of all ages and all ability levels. Lessons will take place from May 23 through June 6. YMCA membership is required. The concentrated group swim package includes five daily 45-minute swim lessons in one week. The week of June 20 to 24, lessons will be available to swimmers ages three through 12. Registration is open to both YMCA members and non-members. In concentrated private sessions, experienced instructors customize each lesson to a swimmer’s individual skill level in a safe and encouraging environment, resulting in quicker skill progression. Young people participating in concentrated group classes receive the benefit of multiple classes within a short period of time. Free workshop for adoptive parents Children’s Aid and Family Services will present a free workshop, “The Adopted Child’s Journey: Questions Along the Way,” at its Family and Adoption Services Center, 148 Prospect Street in Ridgewood, on Thursday, May 19 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The workshop will address issues that often arise for adopted children, including school and peer concerns, Ridgewood High School Student Congress officers and delegates promoted Spirit Week. Spirit Week kicked off with Crazy Sunglasses Day, followed by Preppy Day, Western Day, Patriotic Day, and ended with Color Wars. Freshmen were dressed in red, sophomores in blue, juniors in white, seniors in black, and faculty in green. Friday classes competed in a water balloon fight, with the freshman class dominating the sophomores, juniors, and seniors in separate competitions. Congratulations to the Class of 2014! Memorial Day observance set American Legion Post 53 will distribute poppies made by disabled veterans in the Village of Ridgewood throughout the month of May. Americans wear the red poppies on Memorial Day to commemorate those who have died in battle. This year, Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 30. Jersey Jubilation to perform The Jersey Jubilation Handbell Choir will hold its Spring Concert on Friday, May 20 at 8 p.m. at the Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton Street. The program will include spirituals and hymns, classical arrangements, and original compositions for handbells. The program will feature “Amazing Grace” with two flutes, Beethoven’s “Hallelujah” from “Christ on the Mount of Olives” with James Wynne at the piano, and “How Can I Keep from Singing?” with singing bells. Established in 2004, the Jersey Jubilation Handbell Choir is a not for profit performance level community choir. The choir rings five octaves of Whitechapel handbells and five octaves of Suzuki handchimes. The choir is under the direction of Christine Braden, who has been ringing and directing handbells for over 30 years. A freewill offering will be taken and refreshments will be served. Young artists sought The Ridgewood Art Institute invites all young artists in Ridgewood and the surrounding communities to enter an original work of art in this year’s 52nd Annual Young Peoples Exhibition. Prizes of art class scholarships will be awarded. Students who are ages seven through 17 may enter artwork in any medium. Receiving will be on Saturday, May 21 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit will close on June 17.
