Kosenskis to address beekeepers Ed and Mary Kosenski of E&M Gold Beekeepers will address the Northeast Beekeepers Association of New Jersey on Friday, May 20 at 7:30 p.m. The topic of the presentation will be “Queens and Local Breeding Program” and cover the benefits of New Jersey raised queens, and the art of honeybee queen rearing. The meeting will be held at 678 South Maple Avenue in Glen Rock. The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served. A $5 donation is suggested. The group will meet at Garret at 7 a.m. From Rifle Camp Road, turn onto Mountain Avenue at “the tank,” then make the first right (one way) to the first parking lot on the left (the three-tiered lot). On May 27, Anne Stires will address Fyke at 8 p.m. at the Allendale Municipal Building, 500 West Crescent Avenue. Stires will discuss the efforts of The Hilltop Conservancy, along with the Essex County Parks Department and US Fish & Wildlife Service, to create a 10-acre meadow from
a brown field site. Opera ensemble to perform ‘HMS Pinafore’ The Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company will present “HMS Pinafore” on May 21 at 8 p.m. and on May 22 at 2 p.m. Shows will be held at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School, 1315 Taft Road in Teaneck. This is a new location for the opera company, which formerly performed in Ridgewood. Tickets are $22 for adults; $17 for seniors and students. The Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, a nonprofit, theatrical group, has presented full productions of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan on a regular schedule since its founding in 1937. Learn about Civil War research Stephen D. Glazer will present “Discovering Your Community’s Civil War Heritage” to the Bergen County Genealogical Society on May 23 at 7 p.m. at the Ridgewood Public Library, 125 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. The program will provide practical guidance on how to research a town’s Civil War history. Many of the approaches and
resources to be discussed are accessible from a home computer, often at little or no cost. An official research guide recently published by the state’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee will be available. Glazer received his BA, BSEE, and JD degrees from Rutgers University. He is a recently retired partner in a Manhattan law firm, and an adjunct professor of law at Rutgers. He served as a senior intelligence officer in the Pentagon for six years. He currently serves on New Jersey’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, and has published numerous articles regarding New Jersey and the Civil War. This meeting is free and open to the public. Thrift shop offers Saturday openings The Clothes Line Thrift Shop will offer Saturday openings on May 21, and June 4 and 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in addition to its regular hours on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop has a large assortment of spring and summer clothing for men, women, and children, household items, books, jewelry and hand bags. The shop will accept donations of seasonal clothing and household items until June 1. Coalition plans NW Bergen History Day Members of the NW Bergen Coalition of Historic Organizations recently met to finalize plans for the History Day Tour on May 21.
