Ridgewood May 11, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Last week’s test of the effects of sports field lighting could telegraph the Ridgewood Village Council’s intention to maintain the schedule of shutting off the illumination on municipal sports fields at 9 p.m. A decision is expected this week. The anticipated Ridgewood Village Council resolution would balance the needs of Ridgewood recreational sports groups for more field time against the urgent request of neighbors for more privacy and protection from sports field lighting shining in their windows. The sports groups had asked the council to consider extending the hours of illumination from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights to accommodate game schedules for youngsters on organized teams not affiliated with the school athletic programs. The sports groups have long pointed out that there are not enough available fields in Ridgewood to host competitions against teams from other Field light check could telegraph 9 p.m. shut-down communities. Ridgewood sports groups have devoted considerable amounts of donated funds to provide enhanced lighting at no added expense to the taxpayers. Many neighbors of the fields, however, had said that having the lights on until 9 p.m. on weeknights diminishes their property values and interferes with their privacy. The neighbors want the scheduling kept as it is. In some cases, residents have requested improved backstops to keep balls from hitting their roofs and windows. No results of the sports light testing were available at press time. J. KOSTER Knights to hold ‘Shake the Can’ fundraiser The Ridgewood Knights of Columbus Council #1736 will hit the streets of Ridgewood May 13 through 15 for its annual “Shake the Can” fundraiser to benefit disabled citizens. Knights will be sporting their signature yellow vests as they walk the sidewalks and intersections throughout the village for this annual spring event. Last year’s beneficiaries included Alfa Development of Paramus, Camp Sunshine in Ridgewood, the Archdiocese of Newark Ministry for Persons with Disabilities, Friends to Friends First Reformed Church of Ridgewood, Spectrum for Living of River Vale, Putting the Pieces Together in North Arlington, and local individuals and families.
