Memorial Day observance set American Legion Post 53 will distribute poppies made by disabled veterans in the Village of Ridgewood throughout the month of May. Americans wear the red poppies on Memorial Day to commemorate those who have died in battle. This year, Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 30. Nursery school celebrates 50 years To celebrate 50 years of educating and nurturing young children, West Side Nursery School will hold a Jubilee Field Day on Saturday, May 14 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Rain date: May 21. The event is free and open to the public. Festivities will include a bounce house, balloon animals, arts and crafts, face painting, “tattoos,” basketball with coaches from Goatgear, field games, a sing-along, and refreshments. Attendees are encouraged to bring sunscreen and a blanket. Over the past half a century, West Side Nursery School has expanded from the original three teachers to a staff of 18. Programs are available for children aged two-and-ahalf to five-plus, including “lunch bunch,” summer camp, kindergarten enrichment classes, and a new “step up” to kindergarten class. Earth Day activities set The Ridgewood Environmental Advisory Committee has teamed with the Ridgewood High School Students for Environmental Action Club to create a memorable 2011 Earth Day scheduled for May 14. The event will take place in the Memorial Park at Van Neste Square from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year, a special DOT (Do One Thing) theme has been developed to showcase the community’s effort to keep the town green. Local environmental, governmental, and civic groups will be present. The day will also include entertainment, food, and music. The DOT project, first developed in Ridgewood High School, was initially created to display the average student’s knowledge of environmental sustainability. DOT has since expanded to present Ridgewood with an opportunity to learn and show how individuals may participate. Jersey Jubilation to perform The Jersey Jubilation Handbell Choir will hold its Spring Concert on Friday, May 20 at 8 p.m. at the Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton Street. The program will include spirituals and hymns, classical arrangements, and original compositions for handbells. The program will feature “Amazing Grace” with two flutes, Beethoven’s “Hallelujah” from “Christ on the Mount of Olives” with James Wynne at the piano, and “How Can I Keep from Singing?” with singing bells. Established in 2004, the Jersey Jubilation Handbell Choir is a not for profit performance level community choir. The choir rings five octaves of Whitechapel handbells and five octaves of Suzuki handchimes. The choir is under the direction of Christine Braden, who has been ringing and directing handbells for over 30 years. A freewill offering will be taken and refreshments will be served. Young artists sought The Ridgewood Art Institute invites all young artists in Ridgewood and the surrounding communities to enter an original work of art in this year’s 52nd Annual Young Peoples Exhibition. Prizes of art class scholarships will be awarded. Students who are ages seven through 17 may enter artwork in any medium. Receiving will be on Saturday, May 21 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit will close on June 17. Employment workshop scheduled Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church’s Career Resources Ministry, in its continuing effort to provide help to people seeking employment, will present the last of a four-part series of workshops on Sunday, May 15 at 1 p.m. The workshop will be held in the meeting room in the lower church and is open to anyone seeking employment and those who anticipate possible unemployment. Parish membership is not required. Workshops are presented by the Career Resources Ministry, whose members are dedicated to helping those seeking employment. Professionals in the field will present the workshop and will be on hand to give advice. The May 15 workshop topic will be “Interview, Cultivate Offers, and Negotiate.” Participants should bring a recent resume or job experience information. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. Seniors invited to purchase Graydon badges On May 12, the Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation will offer a convenient chance for village seniors to purchase seasonal memberships at the Community Center in Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. Hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $15 for residents age 62 and up. Note: The cost will increase to $20 per village senior effective May 22. Proof of residency is required. Payment may be made by check, cash, or Visa/MasterCard. Graydon Pool will open June 4 with a weekend celebration that will be free to village residents. Peck to address HILT Nancy Atkins Peck will be the guest speaker at the May 12 Highlights in Leisure Time meeting. Peck will present a program on Norman and Tudor houses designed by architect Carl Kemm Loven that are located in Glen Rock and surrounding area. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at the community center in Ridgewood Village Hall. Also on May 12, seniors will be able to purchase seasonal badges for Graydon Pool from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Badges may be purchased at a discounted rate of $15 until May 22, when the cost will increase to $20. On May 19, HILT will visit the New York Botanical Gardens. The garden maintains one of the world’s largest collections of flora encompassing over 250 acres. A tram tour highlighting the opening of the new azalea garden and a gourmet box lunch will be available. Travelers will board the bus at the Graydon Pool parking lot at 9:15 a.m. The bus will leave at 9:30 a.m. and will return at 4:45 p.m. The cost is $50 for HILT members; $55 for non-members. Guild announces Flea Market plans The Women’s Guild of Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church will hold its annual Flea Market in the church’s barrier-free Education Building, 660 East Glen Avenue at Route 17 South, on Saturday, May 14. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. shoppers will be invited to choose from an array of decorative items, glassware, ceramics, fabric, furniture, books, records, small appliances, toys, baby items, and tools. Club hosts annual House Tour The Junior Woman’s Club of Ridgewood will hold its Fourteenth Annual Spring House Tour on Thursday, May 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The tour, which is a charity event, will feature five unique homes in Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus. A broad variety of homes, each boasting a different architectural and decorating style, have been selected. Local musicians have volunteered to perform at homes throughout the tour. As in years past, arrangements from local florists will be featured in the homes. Tour-goers will be able to enjoy lunch in downtown Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus and take advantage of House Tour Specials offered by participating restaurants. The annual Spring House Tour is the largest fundraiser hosted by the Junior Woman’s Club of Ridgewood, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the community.
