Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • May 4, 2011 Glen Rock “Custer’s Last Man,” based on Glen Rock author John Koster’s 2010 book, “Custer Survivor,” will be shown on The History Channel at 9 p.m. on May 4. The program features interviews with Koster and a number of other experts on the battle of the Little Bighorn, also known as Custer’s Last Stand. The 85-minute documentary, written and produced by Ted Schillinger, was filmed partly at the Ridgewood Public Library and the Ridgewood Historical Society’s Schoolhouse Museum. Schillinger also interviewed Professor Louise Barnett of Rutgers University, who wrote the introduction to the book, which was published by History Publishing Company of Palisades, New York. Schillinger and his film crew traveled to the Montana battlefield and interviewed John Doerner, the National Park Service historian widely considered to be the leading expert on the battle. Doerner endorsed the theory that Sergeant Frank Finckle (who later spelled his surname Finkel), escaped the encirclement of General George Armstrong Custer’s five companies. Schillinger also spoke with John Eagle Shield, a collateral relative of Sitting Bull and director of the medical program at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, who also found the Finkel escape scenario highly probable. Interviews also took place at West Point, and at ‘Custer’s Last Man’ to be featured on History Channel Sotheby’s in New York City, where Custer’s last guidon was recently auctioned for $2.1 million. Schillinger also ordered some independent research at the National Archives which confirmed the original research in Koster’s book. Other experts included Brad Larson of the Oshkosh Public Museum in Wisconsin, who believed the Finkel escape, and Scott Cross, custodian of the Finkel Files, who had strong objections to some parts of the Finkel narrative. Several other Little Bighorn buffs offered their own opinions. Schillinger ultimately visited the town of Dayton, Washington, where Finkel spent the last 40 years of his life and became a prosperous farmer and the head of a respected local family. He spoke with members of the Finkel family and with staff members at the Columbia County Courthouse, which contains records of Finkel’s marriage and land transactions, and saw some of the papers reproduced in “Custer Survivor.” The book is now in its second printing and has received outstanding reviews in The Library Journal and Publishers Week and in the Western press. Residents who drop off or pick up students at local schools are urged not to idle their cars, but to turn off the engines to prevent air pollution and wasted gasoline. The Glen Rock Borough Council approved a similar resolution in 2009. New Jersey state law also forbids drivers from idling any vehicle for more than three minutes. “The creation of idle-free zones for cars dovetails Schools announce no-idling policy with Dr. Verducci’s green vision for the district as well as begins a multi-pronged strategy to increase the emotional and physical well-being of students and staff,” Gamorra said. “With the creation of these idle-free school zones, Dr. Verducci is encourage all (motorists) to turn off their engines when stationary or while awaiting passengers.” Gamorra noted that turning a car off isn’t really hurting the engine. Idling for 10 seconds, she said, uses more gas than it takes to restart the car, and two minutes of idling uses the same amount of gasoline as it takes to drive for one mile. J.
