Village voters select one incumbent, and one challenger
by John Koster
Ridgewood voters elected incumbent Ridgewood Board of Education trustee Sheila Brogan and challenger Christina Krauss in last week’s election, edging out incumbent Laurie Goodman. The $81,323,178 tax levy associated with the 2011-12 school budget was approved with 1,812 votes in favor and 1,446 votes opposed. The budget provides for completion of the wireless network in the school, textbook replacement, and course revision. Krauss, who received 1,720 votes, has been active with Project Pride, served as a class parent, and has been a member of the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce as a former local merchant. One of her children graduated from Ridgewood High School and the other is a student at the Somerville School. Brogan, who received 1,657 votes, is a 15-year board veteran. All three of her children graduated from Ridgewood High School. She is a professional social worker with Children’s Aid and Family Services, where she coordinates the eldercare services, and was
instrumental in founding the Ridgewood Village Center which supervises programs for youngsters and seniors at Ridgewood Village Hall. Brogan has served five consecutive terms on the board, and helped set up the Ridgewood Academy for Health Professionals coordinated with Valley Hospital, a program where students with a serious interest in medicine can experience hospital work. Brogan keeps the board informed of legislative matters at each meet-
ing. Goodman, who received 1,518 votes, is a freelance copy editor. She has served as president of the Somerville Home & School Association and as treasurer of the Federated Home & School Association. She has also served on the municipal alliance. Gerald Clark, who dropped out of the school election three weeks before the balloting, received 510 votes, despite not being an official candidate.
