Peck to address HILT Nancy Atkins Peck will be the guest speaker at the May 12 Highlights in Leisure Time meeting. Peck will present a program on Norman and Tudor houses designed by architect Carl Kemm Loven that are located in Glen Rock and surrounding area. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at the community center in Ridgewood Village Hall. Also on May 12, seniors will be able to purchase seasonal badges for Graydon Pool from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Badges may be purchased at a discounted rate of $15 until May 22, when the cost will increase to $20. On May 19, HILT will visit the New York Botanical Gardens. The garden maintains one of the world’s largest collections of flora encompassing over 250 acres. A tram tour highlighting the opening of the new azalea garden and a gourmet box lunch will be available. Travelers will board the bus at the Graydon Pool parking lot at 9:15 a.m. The bus will leave at 9:30 a.m. and will return at 4:45 p.m. The cost is $50 for HILT members; $55 for non-members. Ridgewood residents who are at least 55 years of age are invited to join Highlights in Leisure Time, a senior organization under the auspices of the Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation. Monthly meetings include entertainment or informational presentations, and refreshments. Annual membership dues are $15. Club hosts annual House Tour The Junior Woman’s Club of Ridgewood will hold its Fourteenth Annual Spring House Tour on Thursday, May 12 from 9:30
a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The tour, which is a charity event, will feature five unique homes in Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus. A broad variety of homes, each boasting a different architectural and decorating style, have been selected. Local musicians have volunteered to perform at homes throughout the tour. As in years past, arrangements from local florists will be featured in the homes. Tour-goers will be able to enjoy lunch in downtown Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus and take advantage of House Tour Specials offered by participating restaurants. The annual Spring House Tour is the largest fundraiser hosted by the Junior Woman’s Club of Ridgewood, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the community. Preschool recreation programs set The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will offer classes for residents who are between the ages of three and five. Both programs will meet at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue, in Ridgewood. Mini Doodler Mix It Up with Abrakadoodle will meet on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. beginning May 4. This art class focuses on fun while building self-confidence and freedom of expression. This is a mixed media class and will include painting, printing, sculpting, collage making, and more. The cost is $110 for the six-week session and includes all materials. On Thursdays, children may participate in Happy Piano. The 30-minute classes will be held between 1 and 2:30 p.m. beginning May 5. Students will learn the basics of music theory and how to play familiar songs on the piano. Educational songs, props, and teaching aids make learning fun.
Each child is provided with his or her own keyboard to use in class. The cost is $110 for the six-week session. An additional $35 kit must be purchased by new students on the first day of class. Dinner Dance to benefit homeless families Ridgewood United Methodist Church, located at 100 Dayton Street in Ridgewood, will host a May 14 Dinner Dance to benefit homeless families. The 7 p.m. event will feature the Kick Start Charlie Band. Dinner will be catered by the Market Basket in Franklin Lakes. The cost is $25 per person. Enrichment classes offered Registration is under way for Ridgewood Recreation’s after school programs for elementary school students. Classes will be held at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue. Each week, young artists will be exposed to new lessons that explore different styles. The cost is $100 for six classes and includes all materials. Drawing, offered to children in grades two through five, will meet on Wednesdays
from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. beginning May 4. Students will work at their own level using pencils and pastels. The cost for the six classes is $54. Materials are additional; a list will be provided at registration. Nature in the Village with New Jersey Audubon, open to children in kindergarten through grade two, will meet on Thursdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. beginning May 5. Students will enjoy seasonal nature discussions, hands-on crafts and nature walks to explore the nearby environs. New topics will be provided weekly. The cost is $95 for six sessions and includes all materials. Aviation Club with Hobby Quest for children in kindergarten through grade five will meet on Fridays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. beginning May 6. Participants will gain knowledge of the world of aviation, learn how to read and evaluate construction plans, and use various hobby tools as they create and operate a variety of air models.
