Ridgewood
Renovated train station will be wheelchair accessible
by John Koster Ridgewood Council Member Paul Aronsohn has confirmed with New Jersey Transit officials that the village’s train station will be accessible to people who use wheelchairs and walkers even if the elevator breaks down. Aronsohn was concerned that the contingency plan for a broken elevator might be insufficient, and that elevator failure would leave those in wheelchairs or with mobility issues few good options when returning from New York, Hoboken, or Secaucus. The councilman reported last week that he was contacted by New Jersey Transit Regional Manager John Del Colle and was told that the company had agreed to a better back-up plan. In the event of an out-of-order elevator, New Jersey Transit will reportedly make arrangements to switch tracks when approaching Ridgewood and let passengers off on the west side, or outgoing New York platforms, where the access is satisfactory. “Needless to say, I was thrilled with the news,” Aronsohn said last week. Two young Ridgewood men were arrested after police who responded to a noise complaint on Spring Avenue discovered a pot and alcohol party where a large number of minors were being served. Patrolman Joseph Youngberg and Patrolman Shane Broglia responded to a neighbor’s complaint about a noisy party in progress at 2:15 a.m. on April 22. When they went to the rear yard, the officers reportedly observed a person on the deck. Further investigation reportedly disclosed a number of people under the age of 21 consuming alcohol. One person who lived at the house was charged with providing alcohol to underage drinkers. That resident and another person were charged with possession of marijuana and released pending an appearance in Ridgewood Municipal Court. In an unrelated incident on April 21, three patrolmen -- Broglia, Sean Amoruso, and Kyle Finch -- responded to a complaint about objects being thrown from a vehicle at a

jogger. Two young men were found urinating near a vehicle that answered the description. They were charged with possession of marijuana and public urination. They will appear in Ridgewood Municipal Court. The Ridgewood Police Department is also investigating a crime spree in which a $200 calculator was reported stolen and a number of high school lockers were looted on April 21. The Ridgewood Detective Bureau received reports that a number of unlocked school lockers in the boys’ locker room had been looted, and that a locker that had been secured was pried open and a calculator valued at $200 was stolen. On the same day, a Woodland Avenue resident reported that she had left her Coach handbag on the front seat of her vehicle and, when she returned to the vehicle the next day, she found the car window smashed and the purse and its contents stolen. Police are investigating this incident. J. KOSTER
station is expected in October. The major renovation project now under way at the train station includes barrier-free access and high-level platforms that will allow passengers to climb into the train cars via steps. The groundbreaking for the $24 million renovation and expansion of the Ridgewood Train Station was observed in early 2009. No local tax money is being used for the project, which is being funded by New Jersey Transit and federal sources. The station is owned by Ridgewood and is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. The station is said to be the only California Mission-style railroad station on the East Coast. The appearance of the station will be preserved by the renovation, authorized after extensive public meetings between railroad executives, council members, and the residents of Ridgewood. The project includes construction of two full-length, high-level platforms with elevators, canopies, stairs, and lighting; accessible parking spaces, curb ramps, and sidewalks; and improvements to the restrooms and ticket window in the station building. The project will bring the station into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and improve the station, incorporating both practical and aesthetic recommendations of Ridgewood officials. Once the renovation in Ridgewood is complete, that station will be one of six area stations to have barrier-free improvements. Those stations include both Ramsey stations, Glen Rock’s borough hall station, and the Paterson and Rutherford stations. Improvements are also planned at the Plauderville Station in Garfield, which would then become the seventh local station to have barrier-free access.
