March 30, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 7 Ridgewood Concert series to feature ‘King David’ As part of the 35th Annual West Side Patron Concert Series, Arthur Honegger’s oratorio, “King David,” will be performed free of charge at West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 South Monroe Street, Ridgewood on Sunday, April 3. This 4 p.m. performance will feature the West Side Oratorio Choir, soloists, and Ridgewood Concert Band. The West Side Oratorio Choir, which is 75 voices strong, will perform this work with organ and orchestra under the direction of Minister of Music Joanne Harris Rodland and Associate Minister of Music Deborah Holden-Holloway. Among the members of the orchestra will be the Ridgewood Concert Band, conducted by Christian Wilhjelm, who is also a member of West Side. At the organ console will be Richard E. Set to music by Honegger in 1921, “King David” employs the compositional style found in early 20th century France, and the text depicts the life of David from humble shepherd to his battle with Goliath, his confrontation with King Saul, crowning, and death. Using a dramatic narration, orchestra, and vocals, this dramatic piece depicts the larger than life King of Israel: David. Soloists will include Deborah Holden-Holloway, Myra Garcia, Kristine DiMauro, Apryl Beddingfield Helder, and Gary Pate. Gai Crawford Grannon will appear as the Witch of Endor, and David Osgood will provide narration. Admission is free. Baby sitting is available for preschool children.
