Field lighting vote expected at April 13 meeting
by John Koster On April 13, the Ridgewood Village Council expects to vote on a new policy on the use of the lights at the Ridgewood High School field. The council again heard from residents on both sides of the issue at last week’s public work session. Based on the show of hands at the work session, the majority of people in the audience favor adding an hour to the time the lights can be used on Friday and Saturday nights. There was also a significant minority who were not in favor of any additional time when the lights could be used. The lights, purchased with donations from a number of local sports groups, have been criticized by a number of neighbors of the high school because the lights shine into the windows of nearby homes and because night games attract out-of-town athletes to compete with Ridgewood athletic group members in events that are not officially school-sanctioned. The local athletic groups, however, contend that the lights help them schedule events that might not otherwise be possible, and allow Ridgewood youngsters to participate in competitive sports. The perceived lack of sports fields has led the sports groups to propose the development of athletic fields at both pieces of land recently acquired by Ridgewood with a combination of open space funds and bonded municipal funds. Sports groups at one point advocated five separate fields at the Habernickel Horse Farm property, but settled for a single football-sized field with an overlapping field that cannot be used simultaneously. About half of the Habernickel property was set aside for passive parks with trails and trees, with the rest dedicated to sports and internal parking lots. The Schedler property, purchased by the council to avoid having the land put up for development, has also been targeted for sports field construction, but the council stated firmly that no money would be set aside for any such construction in the immediate future due to economic constraints.
Student athletes win championships
The Ridgewood High School Boys’ Winter Track Team has won the State Group IV Sectional Championship, and the Girls’ Winter Track Team won the Bergen County Championship. At the New Balance Indoor National Championships, senior Sarah DeVita placed seventh in the pentathlon championship. Her score was a Bergen County record and was the twelfth best score in New Jersey history. In addition, the Boys’ Distance Medley Team, comprised of seniors Juan Llinas and Pat Rynkowski, junior Levi Jennings, and sophomore Neil Schoff, came in seventh in the nation and ran the second fastest time in Bergen County history.
