Page 22 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • March 30, 2011 DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) by the greatest star of Broadway musicals and the greatest pop singer of the 20th century are well worth seeing. Sinatra was months away from winning his Academy Award for “From Here to Eternity,” which would revitalize his career. Songs include “You’re the Top,” “I Get a Kick out of You,” “It Was Just One of Those Things,” and “All Through the Night.” Bert Lahr, the Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz,” is on hand to provide laughs. “King of Kings” (Warner Home Video), new on Bluray, is one of numerous Biblical epics that were popular in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. Made in 1961, it stars Jeffrey Hunter as Jesus, Rip Torn as Judas, Robert Ryan as John the Baptist, and Harry Guardino as Barabbas. Directed by Nicholas Ray (“Rebel without a Cause”), the film covers the entire life of Christ. At close to three hours, the movie lumbers along, and only one miracle is shown: Jesus restores a blind man’s sight. The narration by Orson Welles gives the film stature and import, but the screenplay and routine direction never create dramatic sparks. Hunter, never a major star, handles the role reasonably well, leaning more toward a man conflicted by his destiny than as beatific God on earth. Composer Miklos Rozsa (“Ben-Hur”) has provided a lush symphonic score with regular heavenly chords to hammer home the fact that this is a miraculous tale. The score infuses drama where the performances and script do not. Blu-ray bonus features include a vintage featurette on the making of the movie, a newsreel showing the premiere, and theatrical trailer. Basil Rathbone, the definitive Sherlock Holmes, starred as the detective in 14 films. All 14 are now available in one Blu-ray set, “Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Collection” (MPI Home Video). The first two, set in the 19th century, were major studio productions made in 1939: “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” and “The Hound of the Baskervilles.” Produced by 20th CenturyFox, these are the best in the set, boasting lavish period production design and costumes. From 1942 through 1946, Universal took over the series and continued with Rathbone as Holmes and Nigel Bruce as his frequently bumbling associate, Dr. Watson, but updated the movies to the modern era to save money. The later films are usually just over an hour and were originally intended to be part of a double bill, yet the writing was sharp and performances usually high caliber. Standouts are “The Scarlet Claw” (1944), in which Holmes and Watson head to Canada to investigate a series of gruesome murders that the locals attribute to a legendary phantom marsh monster, and “The Spider Woman” (1944), which features a devious Gale Sondergaard as a formidable match for the detective. Bonus features in the five-disc set include six audio commentaries, an interview with a UCLA Film & Television archivist, footage of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and photo galleries.
