New Jersey Transit to begin repairs at Warren Avenue
by Jennifer Crusco New Jersey Transit representatives held a preconstruction meeting with Ho-Ho-Kus officials last week in anticipation of the track and roadway repairs the company will make where its tracks cross Warren Avenue near the Ridgewood border. Following that meeting, Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli reported that New Jersey Transit plans to begin the work the night of Friday, April 1. The project is slated to begin at 9 p.m. that evening, and should continue for the next two weeks. Work will be carried out on weekdays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 9 p.m., and could continue for extended hours on Saturdays. Crews also expect to be working on the project one or two nights. New Jersey Transit will replace the section of tracks now located in the Warren Avenue roadway and will repave the street. Cirulli noted that New Jersey Transit has been asked to coordinate its work with Bergen County, which is still in the midst of repairs to the Warren Avenue Bridge. The goal, Cirulli said, is to have New Jersey Transit finish its project while the county is still at work on the bridge. Last fall, the Warren Avenue Bridge was closed to all motorists and pedestrians so county crews could begin a complete refurbishment of that structure. Plans had called
for that project to be finished at the end of 2010, but winter weather conditions did not allow for certain aspects of the project to be completed, Cirulli said. The administrator noted that the county’s crews must still pour concrete, paint, and install lights. He recently heard from the county that the bridge project should be completed by the end of the spring or the beginning of summer. The bridge project involves new reinforcements, resurfacing of the deck, new sidewalks, and new lights. Built in 1905, the Warren Avenue Bridge is a through truss bridge that allows vehicular and pedestrian traffic to cross over the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook on Warren Avenue. The Warren Avenue Bridge, which is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, was reportedly rehabilitated by Bergen County in 1921.
Laura Mendez of Ridgewood, an eighth grader at Academy of Our Lady in Glen Rock, recently became the third place middle school winner of Power to Learn’s third annual “Hispanic Heritage Month” essay contest. During the awards ceremony, Mandez read her winning essay and received a Netbook presented by Cablevision representatives. Principal Patricia Keenaghan, Assistant Vice Principal Moore, teacher Karen Krug, and Bergen County Executive Kathe Donovan joined in the ceremony. In celebration of “Hispanic Heritage Month,” Cablevision’s Power to Learn and Olympusat, Inc. sponsored the essay contest for middle school students (grades six through eight) and high school students. This year’s topic was The Hispanic Experience in New York. Students were asked to describe someone or something they believe has had a vital role in shaping the Hispanic experience in the greater New York area and/or how their own life in the greater New York area has been shaped and

Olympusat, Inc. is the provider of such Spanish language channels as Latele Novela, TV Colombia, TV Chile and La Familia, all available on iO TV® as part of the iO en Español programming service. “I’d like to thank Cablevision for providing this opportunity to our students to pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have so enriched this community and our nation,” noted Bergen County Executive Donovan. “Laura Mendez’s thoughtful writing and understanding of her ethnic background should be applauded and I congratulate her for this accomplishment.” Principal Keenaghan added, “Congratulations to Laura for her fine work. It’s through opportunities such as this that students today can express their pride while preserving the proud history and cultural traditions of Latinos everywhere.”
