Anne Armstrong-Coben, M.D.
Children’s Aid and Family Services will honor Ridgewood residents Anne Armstrong-Coben, M.D. and Doris Hansmann at its April 7 gala, “Love Is All You Need.” The event will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Venetian in Garfield. Dr. Armstrong-Coben is being honored for her leadership and advocacy on behalf of the medical needs of vulnerable children and youth. The doctor is a pediatrician and assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at Columbia University Medical Center, and recently became the medical director for Children’s Aid and Family Services, spearheading the new Medical Services and Advocacy Center for children in foster care. Dr. Armstrong-Coben has an extensive history of helping vulnerable and at-risk youth. She formerly served as medical director at Covenant House, where she helped develop a new medical facility providing health care for homeless/at-risk youth. She also served as a medical consultant to the New Jersey Office of the Child Advocate. Her work at Columbia focuses on community pediatrics. Dr. Armstrong-Coben teaches medical students at Columbia College of Physician and Surgeons in a course that focuses on communication skills and keeping the patient perspective foremost in decision-making. Hansmann, a long-time Ridgewood resident and community volunteer, is receiving special recognition from the agency for her many years of service and support. She
is one of the founders of Family Counseling Services of Ridgewood and the Vicinity, which became part of Children’s Aid and Family Services in 1995. She remains a strong supporter of the agency, and is actively involved with many local organizations, including the College Club of Ridgewood, Ridgewood Public Library, and as a volunteer at Kurth Cottage, Valley Hospital’s gift shop. The event also will feature a performance by Caledon, the Scottish tenors, a buffet, open bar, and auctions. Additionally, the 15 carat “Love” emerald necklace, created by Arthur Groom & Co. especially for the gala, will be given away as a prize. Some of the auction prizes include vacation packages to Aruba, Bermuda, Florida, and Colorado Springs; golf packages; catered cocktail parties; and an Apple iPad. Tickets start at $150 and are available online at www.cafsnj.org or by calling (201) 261-2800. Children’s Aid and Family Services is one of the leading nonprofit human services organizations serving northern New Jersey. The agency is fully accredited and has served the community for more than 110 years. Its mission is to preserve, protect and, when needed, provide families. Motivated by compassion for vulnerable children, young adults, frail elderly and their families, it provides high-quality and innovative services that meet their social, educational and emotional needs. On March 27 at 6:30 p.m., the full-length documentary “Abused: The Postville Raid” will be shown at The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood. The film tells the story of the most brutal, most expensive, and one of the largest Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in the history of the United States. By weaving together the personal stories of the individuals, the families, and the town directly affected by the events of May 12, 2008, the film presents the human face of the issue of immigration reform and serves as a cautionary tale against abuses of constitutional human rights. On May 12, 2008, 389 undocumented workers were arrested and placed in handcuffs and chains by 900 heavily armed ICE agents at Agriprocessors, Inc., the largest kosher slaughterhouse and meat-packing plant in the country. In just four days, nearly 300 of these workers were fast-tracked through the U.S. legal system, convicted of criminal charges, and sentenced to prison. Individuals were

left humiliated, families were torn apart, and a community of great diversity was left in ruin. The undocumented workers were charged as felons and sentenced to five months in prison. Many of those arrested were the sole breadwinners in their families. As a result, the effects of the imprisonments were also felt in the detainees country of origin. After the film a discussion will be facilitated by the film producer Luis Argueta, along with co-producer Vivian Rivas. Child care will be available. Call Mandy Restivo at (212) 304-0647. This program is sponsored by the Social Responsibilities Council of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood. A $5 donation is suggested and at door. Light refreshments will be available. The Unitarian Society is located at 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. Phone (201) 444-6225 or visit www.uuridgewood.org.
