Seniors invited to learn about available services
The Glen Rock Senior Citizen Advisory Committee will host an April 12 program to help senior citizens learn how they can remain in their homes as long as possible. The talk, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the council chambers of the Glen Rock Municipal Building, will feature Lorraine Joewono, director of senior services of Bergen County, who will describe the various Bergen County programs available to older residents. The program will be followed by a question and answer period. Joewono will outline the State Health Insurance Program Unit, known as SHIP, in which counselors help Medicare enrollees understand the benefits to which they are entitled, including Medicare, Medigap, HMO, PPI, and long term care policies. She will also cover the Health and Welfare Unit that provides Meals on Wheels to the homebound, congregate meals to nutrition/senior centers, health screenings, senior wellness fairs, and other services. The speaker will also discuss the Bergen County Care Management Unit, which refers homebound individuals and their caregivers to county care managers, who can help families to better understand the complex long-term care system and the services it provides. These services can help seniors remain in their own homes. Joewono will also discuss the Bergen County Information and Assist Unit that provides information on adult day care, home care programs, legal services, pharmaceutical assistance, respite care, transportation, reverse mortgage counseling, tax relief, and other services. The Division of Senior Services is the primary agency in Bergen County that plans and coordinates services for county residents over the age of 60 and their caregivers. The division is the first in New Jersey, and in the United States, having been established in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Older Americans Act into law.

Kate Harrision, Antonia Nuzzolo, Kathryn Monahan, Jennifer McMahon, Troop Leader Jean Nuzzolo, and Maoko Ueda from Girl Scout Troop 197 in Glen Rock found a great way to help young children in their town and support YCS, a social services agency that cares for children and teens with mental health challenges. The Girl Scouts set up a three-day arts camp for children in grades one through four at the Glen Rock Library. The camp was free, but parents were asked to make a donation of new toys and games or a monetary donation to YCS for children at its therapeutic residences. The camp was a great success and the Scouts received a bin full of in-kind donations of toys, games, and other items of need. The participating Scouts earned their Silver Award for this project.
