(continued from Restaurant page) elected the man who killed him -- former police officer and firefighter Dan White, who also shot Mayor George Moscone. White’s defense lawyers convinced the jury that White’s judgment was impaired by depression and junk food and won a conviction for manslaughter rather than murder, a verdict that prompted riots. More than a mere political biography, “The Times of Harvey Milk” beautifully captures the political and social landscape of San Francisco’s Castro District, where these events took place. The interviews are articulate and moving and illustrate the impact Milk had. Blu-ray extras include director commentary; a new program about “The Times of Harvey Milk” and Gus Van Sant’s “Milk” featuring Epstein, Van Sant, actor James Franco, and several of Milk’s friends; interview clips not used in the film; and a collection of audio and video recordings of Milk. “Stand by Me” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment), now available in a 25th Anniversary Blu-ray Edition, is about four young friends who find the remains of a missing teenager. Adapted from the Stephen King novella, “The Body,” the movie takes place in a small Oregon town where a group of friends -- sensitive Gordie (Wil Wheaton), tough guy Chris (River Phoenix), flamboyant Teddy (Corey Feldman), and timid scaredy-cat Vern (Jerry O’Connell) -- set out on a quest to find the body.

Wanting to be heroes in each other’s and their hometown’s eyes, they embark on two-day trek that turns out to be a journey from childhood to maturity. They sneak smokes, tell tall tales, curse, and band together when the going gets tough. Their resolve is tested when they run into the town’s knife-wielding hoods, who are also after the body. Director Rob Reiner combines drama and comedy and captures the way kids talk among themselves when adults are not around. It’s a nostalgic, touching look at youth without sentimentality. Blu-ray extras include a picture-in-picture retrospective with director Rob Reiner and actors Wheaton and Feldman, a music video, and a making-of featurette. “Alien 2: On Earth” (Midnight Legacy) is the uncut widescreen release of the 1980 Italian horror/sci-fi film directed by Ciro Ippolito that was intended to be the sequel to Ridley Scott’s “Alien” well before the official sequel, “Aliens,” was made. It was never released in the United States. This is one of a slew of foreign-made movies that attempted to capitalize on American action pictures of the 1970s. At 84 minutes, “Alien 2: On Earth” is fast-paced and viscerally exciting if not always logical. A group of cave explorers is confronted in an underground cavern by a mysterious living rock that is home to lethal, flesh-eating creatures intent on wiping out the entire human population. The special effects are pretty good, even though the movie has nowhere near the budget of either “Alien” or “Aliens.” The movie features plenty of gore, suspense, and aliens exploding from people’s bodies. The cinematography is first-rate, with beautiful mountain and desert scenery. Blu-ray extras include the only surviving trailer from the rare Dutch VHS and special effects outtakes.
