Glen Rock
Council introduces municipal-purpose budget for 2011
by John Koster
Last week, the Glen Rock Borough Council introduced a $16,525,756 municipal-purpose budget that will result in a tax increase of about $88 on a Glen Rock house assessed at $547,600, the borough’s average. The budget hearing has been scheduled for the April 13 council meeting. As introduced, the budget represents only about 21 percent of the local tax bill. Approximately 70 percent of the local property tax bill goes to fund the public schools and nine percent covers Bergen County expenses. The proposed municipal budget will be defrayed by $12,472,752 from property taxes, $2,356,432 from local revenue, and $996,572 from state aide, with $700,000 taken from surplus. Sources of revenue included the sale of pool badges and construction permits, and municipal court fines. Substantial increases in resources were also obtained from the sale of recycled cardboard, which is now picked up in a special collection.
Jim Seaton, a lifetime Glen Rock resident, praised the department of public works for their responsible and energetic round-up of cardboard that was scattered by wind on a recent Monday morning pickup. He urged residents to tie up and weigh down their cardboard during windy weather. The Glen Rock Borough Council also honored the entire emergency medical services corps, with special mention to those members who had particularly distinguished themselves. Christine McDonald Kochaniec, chief of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps, was honored for responding to more than 120 calls in 2009 and more than 110 calls in 2010. Ambulance corps members who were honored included Michael Bendett, who responded to more than 170 calls in 2009 and more than 100 calls in 2010; Dave Behar, who responded to more than 100 calls for medical assistance in 2009 and 2010; Michael Teegan, who responded to more than 100 calls for medical assistance 2009 and 78 calls in 2010; and Fred Canavan, who is also a member of the Glen Rock Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment, who responded to 100 medical calls in 2009 and 2010 in addition to his service as a firefighter.
